Seniors In The Tax Picture With real estate taxes up an average of 15 percent in McHenry county and only slightly less elsewhere, many senior citizens are worried about being taxed out of their homes "Illinois has a pretty good property tax relief program for senior citizens already and I'm very hopeful it will become the l>est in the nation next year." State Rep Cal Skinner. Jr (R McHenry county) observed Tax rebates are available tor all seniors whose household income was less than $10,000 last year By all . I mean both renters and homeowners. - ' Skinner said "I'm happy to report that the (General Assembly has just passed two bills that will substantially increase benefits lor seniors and the disabled," the McHenry county Republican said Through amendments adopted in the House, tax rebates will be available to all seniors receiving less than $15.(KM) in household income, assuming Governor Thompson signs either of two bills passed this year," the representative explained "Senate Bill 1617 amended the circuit breaker program to provide for rebates of all real estate taxes in excess of 4 percent of household income In short, a senior's net property tax bill would not increase unless his or her income went up," Skinner continued "House Bill 2707 provides for a similar tax rebate plan, except no grant would be for mor^han $650 In my opinion, it is not as good for seniors as is Senate Bill 1617." Skinner said Seniors who have not yet applied for rebates of last year s property taxes may still do so Applications may be received by writing Skinner's Springfield office (2006 Stratton Building, Springfield, 111 , 62706i Those who wish to encourage Governor Thompson to sign either SB 1617 or HB 2707 are urged to write: Chief Executive, State Capitol, Springfield, 111 , 62706, Skinner says Rebates under the recently passed bills can be applied for starting next January So says the VA... i^HOW RANDS have VOU CHECKtP OJ ail tme veteranis BENEPITS YOU RE ENTITLED To. v HANDS?
