V Participate In MECO Program PAGE 23 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JULY 26,1878 ROD ADAM Two medical students from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Urbana, are participating this summer in the MECO (Medical Education and Community Orientation) program at McHenry hospital. JOSEPH GOLBUS Rod Adam of Wilcox, Neb., and Joseph Golbus of Highland Park, 111., will spend the next two months studying the health care system of the McHenry area, under the direction of the project director, Edward F. Wilt, Jr., M D , F.A.C.P., chairman of the hospital's department of medicine. The students are learning all aspects of medical practice, hospital resources, policies and procedures, emergency medical services, and the area's health care resources which cooperate with the physician and the hospital by providing adjunct services to the patient. They are accompanying McHenry hospital surgeons, internists and other physicians on their hospital rounds, ob serving them jn their offices, studying, in depth such departments as] pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, and obstetrics- gynecology. The students' schedule in cludes instruction on how the physician utilizes laboratory medicine and radiology, oral surgery and podiatry. They will attend meetings of the Hospital's Tumor Board and Cancer registry, which is af filiated with the American College of Surgeons. Outside the hospital, the MECO students are being of fered orientation by institutions such as the Family Service and Mental Health clinic, Pioneer Center for the Exceptional, the health departments of McHenry county and of Lake county, Special Education District of McHenry, Senior Citizens, and McHenry hospital's Outreach programs. "By the end of this summer program, these medical students will have a clear concept of the many cooperating agencies and services which together provide a health care system for an area such as this," says Dr Wilt. "They will have studied the whole picture of patient care - including how to utilize the adjunct services of official and voluntary agencies, as well as the supportive services of the Hospital. Complete patient care involves all of these." The program through Sept. 2. continues Mail Multi-Year Plate Renewals Secretary of State Alan J. Dixon said his office has begun mailing more than six million pre-print renewal applications for 1979 passenger car license plates, the first under the new multi-year plate and staggered registration system The new blue on white aluminum plates will show "79" in the top right corner and ttte expiration date sticker will be placed in the top left corner This 1979 plate will remain on the current vehicle or any replacement through 1983 Changeover to the new system will require two years and at the end of that time, all registration for passenger ca'rs will expire in the nine months of March through November December has been set aside for registration of motorcycles, fleet and leased passenger vehicles No registrations will expire in January and February "We are doing everything possible to acquaint car owners with the new system," Dixon safd. "An explanation of ex piration dates wiU beatUu* top of every application along with fees for two options, short and extended The last two digits of the 1978 license number will determine the expiration month for each applicant " In addition, instruction meetings on the multi year plates are being held throughout the state by secretary of state personnel for car dealers and others who will be selling 1979 licenses so they will be able to serve the public efficiently. / Dixon aW pointed out that a package with the expiration stic^r will be mailed with all 1979 licenses, along with in structions for placement on the rear license "Because the sticker is as important as the license. 1 urge everyone to apply it to the plate as soon as the package is received," Dixon added It is illegal to display the new 1979 plates before Dec. l, the day over-the-counter sales begin Deadline for reassignment and special request numbers is Sept 30, as established by law. "Our office will make every effort to accommodate special requests for specific 1979 license combinations," Dixon said "After reviewing last year's program, we have made some improvements which include a thorough check on the availability of a requested number "Our main problems are that many requested numbers have already been assigned and are protected by the reassignment statute or are not manufac tured " All applicants marking "No" to the question, "Do you want the same plate number7" will be removed from reassignment protection and placed in the special request group. Ap plicants who already have a good number but want a better one must take this chance, although every effort will be made to honor requests, Dixon said. Colonial America Skill Museum Program Topic Sunday, July 30, the McHenry County Historical museum in Union will present a special talk and demonstration on drying flowers at 3 p.m This skill was in wide use in Colonial America Families then were especially interested in drying herbs and flowers not only to preserve food but also to ward off evil spirits, cure illnesses, repel insects, and enhance their homes with pleasant scents. Today, the art of drying flowers is as much prized as it was then. Mary Walker of Woodstock, a nationally accredited flower show judge of twenty years' experience, will explain and demonstrate the many facets of this craft using both wild and garden flowers from her own property. Here is an op- nortunitv to hear and ask questions of Mrs.Walker who is a highly respected garden expert The museum will be open from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and will highlight artifacts from McHenry. Sunday programs have been well attended and interested persons are urged to come early and enjoy both the demonstration and McHenry county history. There is a small admission charge for non-members. Air Pollution Illinois Attorney General William J. Scott has acted to force Commonwealth Edison, one of the state's largest sources of air pollution, to take immediate steps to meet federal clean air regulations at four of the company's major electrical power plants in Illinois. Scott charged in Federal Court that Com Ed plants in Waukegan, Joliet, Romeoville and Kincaid are emitting pollutants which are harmful to the health of the public. ..„a vlS* POT y S&e How cress PRE-WINTER SAVINGS ON OUR ENTIRE COLLECTION...FURS OF ALL KINDS NOW PRICED A T: Special Custom Orders Also At Savings NOW! 10%„ 50 % OFF!
