any hour of the day discloses a num er of cars parked by the high way, where folks are making some dandy catches of fish. Many are also fi--h-- ing in the De< Plaines River: and &re usually rewarded with a good mess of builheads. They alone are the ones who can remove the stigma from Lake County. They are the ones to whom we must look. We hope they will not be found wanting in this, the most serious probiem that ever has confronted us. -- The great majority of law--abiding citizens of Lake County have become nauseated over conditions that have been allowed to grow worse instead of better. With this great majority the Daily Sun demands to know what our officials intend to da about it. Grande Cleaners PAGE FOUR We would like to be charitable and assume the attitude that our law--enforcing officials are blameless--that they have been cendering to the public a full measure of conscientious service. Such an assumption, however, would: be little short of farcical. These officials must know, as do the majority of citizens through-- out Lake County that law--breaking is rampant, and that violators appear to have little fear of consequences. Slot machines are a violation of the law and cannot operate without protection of one kind or another. Neither is it possible 'or breweries and stills to operate, and for beer to be transported ro and fro, without protection. iy. We But it is to us. That one prominent county official has been receiving $2 a week on each of several hundred slot machines; that fifty per cent of the proceeds go to Nick Ganas of Chicago, the owner; that twenty per cent went to a Waukegan saloonkeeper; that twenty percent more went to another county official, and that other lesser officials got cuts. The article charges also that Capone and Moran followers bo. established alky--cooking stills in Lake County, alleging also that a huge brewery is in operation in the county, and that truckloads of beer are being run into Chicago daily, with a pay-- ment of $5 a batrrel in Lake County for protection. There are other charges also of frequent battles in Lake County between the rival gangs, of the theft of slot machines and the hi--jacking of beer trucks. And the battle for supremacy has just started, j Similar gang wars have existed in Chicago and Cook coun-- ty. We have regarded these with more or less complacency. But it is different now, for the situation has been brought home Entered at the Post Office at Libertyville, I!linois as Second Class Matter MEMBER iLLINO!IS PRESS ASsOCIATION One Day Service Dry Cleaning Your finest fabrics are safe with us, because we employve a corps of skilled workmen.
