The variety most people will select is the Dwarf Cavendish. It will grow only to about 6 feet and produce bananas, hopefully, 5 inches long. It should be in a large pot or box, perhaps 2 feet each way, and should have light, a good mixture of sand, peat, potting soil and leafmold or compost. It should be watered heavily in spring and summer and get plenty of light, fertilize with fish emulsion or fertilizer with potash With prices what they are, and inflation continuing, why not a garden room with bananas in the corner to pay for their own existence? Remember that after the plant flowers and produces fruit, that tree dies. Cut off the tree at its base. National Meat Judging Contest For Area Youth Don Swanson of Woodstock will represent the State of Illinois at the National 4-H Meats judging contest, ac­ cording to Craig Scheidecker, McHenry county Extension adviser. Don placed in the top five at the state invitational 4-H Meats judging contest held Aug 26 at Springfield he was a member of the McHenry county meats judging team Which was the number one team in the state. According to Scheidecket, members competing in the state invitational contest ii|- cluded Debbie Kuhlman of Hebron who had the third highest total score of the contest Debbie will not be od the state team due to the fact that she is 13 years old.
