Agriculture, McHenry county) Killer Bees - Killer African bees from South America are not a threat to'the United States, Gene Killion of the state of Illinois Department of Agriculture Apiary division explained to thirty-three area beekeepers recently These bees will not be in the United States for 15 years according to research by Dr. Orlee Taylor. By that time the United States Bee industry predicts they will have a supply of European Queen bees that when in troduced to the african colonies will create the harmless trait the present bee industry knows In other comments by Mr Killion, he explained new beekeepers are better off when starting into beekeeping with a package of bees in the spring and building their own hive. Starting fresh versus having a hive of bees given to you is better since you become more familiar with equipment and run the chance of having less disease problems He also explained that it is important not to remove all of the honey in the fall, since bees do need a water and food supply The area beekeepers serving northern Illinois counties meet the fourth Tuesday of each month in Woodstock Contact my office to get on the mailing list Wrap Young Trees - To protect newly planted trees from winter injury caused by sun scald, wrap them in burlap, forty pound kraft paper or in any tough crepe-tvpe. asphalt- impregnated paper Wrap the paper or burlap around the tree from the lower branches to the ground Remove wrap next year in early April Store Pesticides Safe!\ - You can keep unused pesticides and herbicides for use next year if you seal and store them properly Store the pesticides where they won't freeze or get too hot Keep in dry locations so cans and bags won't rot Store in original container • destroy any pesticide that has lost its label >. Store where children and animals cannot get to them and preferably keep the chemicals locked up Ear Rots May Affect Livestock- Above-normal August rainfall and serious insect damage to ears have favored development of several ear rots in corn and potential mycotoxin problems, according to Barry Jacobsen our Extension plant pathologist. Mycotoxin problems can be avoided, however, with care and an awareness of potential problems The prevalence of ear rots is increased by insect and bird damage to ears and stalk rot Fungi which cause ear rots may produce mycotoxins and create grain storage problems A reddish mold beginning at the ear tip i$ the characteristic sign of Gibberella ear rot Fusarium ear rot causes a salmon-pink to reddish brown discoloration of individual kernels or groups of kernels scattered over the ear Penicillium ear rot occurs primarily on injured ears.
