Gypsy Moth Monitoring The Illinois State Depart ment of Agriculture was in the McHenry area Nov. 21, sear ching for egg masses of the Gypsy Moth. This monitoring is done in cooperation with the McHenry County Department of Health During the summer. Moths were found 120 in the vicinity of Whispering Oaks sub division. The Gypsy Moth is a foreign insect that has become one of the United States' most im portant foreign pests. Although harmless in the moth stage. the caterpillars feed on the leaves of shrubs and trees. Gypsy Moths became established in this country in 1869 after specimens imported from Europe escaped from a laboratory in Massachusetts. The moth has no natural enemies in this country as they have in Europe and Asia. Heavy infestations can strip whole forests in a matter of days. The defoliation may seriously weaken a tree, making it susceptible to secondary attacks by other insects and plant diseases. Since the first Gypsy Moth infestation more than 100 years ago. the pest has spread to all six New England states ..in recent years a portion of central Michigan was also lightly infested. Although the Gypsy Moths sprr id naturally, they are carried long distances by hitchhiking with goods and people. To stop this hitchhiking, owners should check the un dersides and exterior areas of motor homes and travel trailers as well as outdoor furniture, toys and firewood before moving from infested area. • • * • ~ It takes intelligence to admit that another is smarter than you are, in some respects.
