I»7X Warriors Win Opener, Then Lose Two Games In Sycamore Cage Tourney t By Dick Rabbitt i The McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig.won their opening game in Sycamore last Friday night defeating Belvidere 67-59 However, they were not so fortunate in the following two games as they were defeated in both games, In the opener against Belvidere the young and inexperienced crew of Ken Ludwig jumped off to a quick lead on Krett Thomas basket at 7:30 of the opening period and increased their lead to 19 to 15 at the end of the period With Len Jensen and sophomore Bobby Zeller leading the way in the early going of the second quarter the Warriors built a 28 to 15 lead At this time the veteran coach decided to see what other team members had to offer and be began to clear the bench It at times resem bled a tennis match with players coming in and going out Belvidere took advantage of the affiar and began a rally that" saw them in front at the intermission 32 to 31 In the third period after the Bucs had increased their lead to 42 to 39 over the Warriors. Lennv Lensen two auick baskets followed by Bobby Zeller s two pointer, gave the Warriors a 45 to 44 lead and they were never headed the rest of the game Tim Zeller s basket at the buzzer gave the Warriors a 47 to 44 lead at the end of the third period The final period saw the Warriors maintain their lead and in crease it to 10 pts with Thomas basket at" 0:30 to a comfortable 65 yo 55 margin They went on to win 67 to 59 Lost to Rochelle in Semi-Finals In the Saturday afternoon game playing Rochelle in the semi-finals, the Warriors took a turnabout as they lost to the Hubs 57 to 43 Rochelle had earlier defeated Sycamore on Friday night 54 to 49$ with Sycamore playing without the services oT several players, who had just ended their football season The Warriors trailed 13 to 12 at the end of the first period, and there was still hope for the Warriors In the second period the Warriors began to play throw away basketball, and the Hubs in creased their lead to 32 to 25 at the intermission In the final two periods the Warriors tried but could not come close and went down to their first defeat of the season 57 to 43 Trounced b\ DeKalb In the third place game Saturday evening the Warriors were soundly trounced by a well balanced DeKalb five. The Warriors jumped out to a quick 12 to 4 lead, but the Barbs rallied to tie it at 14 all at the end of the period. From then on it was just a matter of how high the score would be, as the outmanned Warriors tried time and time again to stay in the ball game The Warriors tried and tried, but to no avail as the Barbs made the key plays when it was necessary Probably a big factor in this game was the Warriors made only 3 free throws while committing 26 fouls, while the Barbs made 14 free throws and only 9 fouls In talking with Coach Lud wig. the popular McHenry coach commented. "On Friday night we played real well for a young and inexperienced team Saturday the coach went on to say "After watching Rochelle play. I thought we would win. but we played poorly, and the kids know they did not do the job". "Against DeKalb the team played a good first half, then the experience of the Barbs began to tell, and they just out manned us all the way The coach went on to explain that the "young and inex perienced team will have its ups and downs this season" "We must have patience, and No. 1 in the Fox Valley Area SOFT WATER A RENTAL 50 $175 $0 mo. and mo.
