The theory behind this policy is to curb impulse buying and giving by grandparents and other donors who see an adorable puppy or kitten and decide this is the perfect gift But the noisy .holiday ex citement, the possibility feeding the puppy junk food instead of a carefully planned bone-building diet, the temp tation to give a live pet to small children of the household who roughouse more than is good for the pet and don't give it enough time to itself to promote its best growth, are all con­ sidered hazards by the experts. Housebreaking a puppy should be a sustained serious effort, but this may become more difficult when the puppy is introduced during the holidays Also, it was generally believed that too large a per centage of the pets adopted out at Christmas were returned later, usually in worse con­ dition than when they left However, in a current issue of the magazine "American Humane" some facts are presented that would indicate that not as many of the Christmas adoptions turn into fiascos as was supposed. In an article by Shirley A Me- Dermott. the manager of the Wisconsin Humane society at Milwaukee, Albert Keller, is quoted: "My statistics just don't support it " Keller first began looking back over his statistics while studying manpower allocation That is. when peak periods call for the more part-time em ployees and when slow periods allow him to schedule vacation time He insists.
