JANUARY 10. 1979 Last Second Shot Sinks Warriors Friday Night Nelson Heroics Lift Woodstock Past Locals 49-47 In FVCTilt By Dick Rabbitt Mike Nelson's twenty-five, footer at the buzzer enabled the Woodstock Blue Streaks to defeat the Warriors 49 to 47 in a Fox Valley tilt Friday night. Saturday, the Warriors lost to Palatine Fremd, 71-61,. Friday Brett Thomas's jump shot with five seconds remaining tied the score for the Warriors. The streaks immediately called a time out. The inbound pass to Nelson who raced up the floor unguarded, let fly after crossing midcourt, and as the buzzer was sounding, all you could see was the ball going • through the bottom of the net. iIt was indeed a disappointing t • loss for Coach Ken Ludwig and his Warriors. „ The Warriors started out . 'about as cold as the weather outside Buckner Gym. The Vikings made 23 of 26 from the charity stripe to seal down the victory. The Warriors outshot the Vikes from the field 26 to 24. Neither team could make a basket in the early going until Lenny Jensen found the bottom of the hoop for a quick Warrior 2 to 0 lead. They increased their margin to 6 to 2, and from then on exchanged baskets with the Vikings until Griffith's two baskets in the final minute made the score 16 all at the end of the period. In the second period the Warriors began to play the brand of basketball that is expected of them. They moved the ball, played good defense, and had some consistent shooting, and grabbed a 34 to 30 halftime lead. At the 5:30 mark of the third period Brett Thomas's basket tied it at 36 all, and then the Vikings with superior height broke loose with a flury of baskets and led going into the fipal period 52 to 47. However, the Warriors were' not about to lie down and quit. With Tim Zeller, Bitterman, Sroka and Thomas' the Warriors fought back and trailed by one 57 to 56 at 5:15. With the Warriors in possession, and in position to grab the lead, an offensive foul charged aginst them gave the Vikes the ball and for all matters and purposes that was the ball game as they in­ creased their lead to the final ten point bulge 71 to 61. The Warriors were a dif­ ferent ball club than the one that was on the floor Friday night against Woodstock. They were more patient, they played a good defensive game, but the uncanny ability of the Vikings at the free throw line, along with their superior rebounding ability was just too much for the Warriors. ^Friday its back in the Fox Vally at Cary Grove. The Palatine club canned 23 of 26 free throws to seal the fate of the locals, who outohot the visitors from the floor. The Warriors were outscored by 14 points at the charity stripe. McHenry had led at halftime, 34-30, but the height advantage enjoyed by Palatine was too much to overcome as the winners controlled the boards. Friday, the Warriors travel to Cary-Groveto battle the Trojans in another Fox Valley conference contest. Skyhawk guard Randy Wakitsch had four fouls called upon him in the first quarter of play. Center Frank Jakubicek also got in foul trouble in the first quarter. Both starters had to sit the bench for much of the game, and eventually, both fouled out. Ride Neiss and Chuck Novy were high scorers for John­ sburg. Each netted 15 points. Gary Guetzloff scored 9. There was a time when « neither snow nor cold, hell or high water would keep us from a basketball game. The cold kept us home by the fireside Friday night. Came Saturday night and away we went to see the visiting Fremd of Palatine team play our Warriors. We lost. That's not news. But, the game was close most of the way and our boys put up a good battle to make it interesting. This was probably one of the better games for the Ludwig team. Again a tall center was too much for our side. Those rebounds are so important. Elroy Fitzgerald, well known for years in various sports activities, was one of the of­ ficials. Can't see that he has slowed down. He seemed to be right on top of the action. That gray hair might fool you. Marge Cooper was wearing one of those snappy new Booster Club jackets. She's a great booster for McHenry High athletics. Sports Photo Award Plaindealer photographer Wayne Gaylord has been notified that his photo of a pair of wrestlers entitled "Oh, The Pain" captured third place in the Region Five competition of the National Press Photographers monthly news contest. Gaylord has won numerous awards in sports photography, but this is his first winner with high school wrestlers. The photo ran seven columns across the sports page in the Nov. 29 edition of The Plaindealer. It showed Joe, Mullen of McHenry, winning a 7-2 decision over his Streamwood opponent. One comment made by judges, "Lots of good sports action, but once'again, three of the photos submitted stood out head and shoulders above the rest." Concerning Gaylord's winning photo, judges said, "Third Place is an interesting composition, with good feelings for action and good expressions." Region five covers Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. It was the second Region Five award for Gaylord in 1978. Earlier in the year, he earned a third place for a photo in the spot news category.
