Debate Team To State SECTION 2 - PAGE 1 "PLAIN'DKALEK - WEDNESDAY. APRIL 4,1979 1* Lakemoor-Lilymoor Margaret Karas 385-4934 Ruth Snyder, left, Derek Gilbert, Jill Hutchinson and Russ Crittenden talk over details of the state final debate competition in which they will be participating for the first time since the debate program was instituted in McHenry high school just five years ago. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD The McHenry high school debate team is winding up its most successful season in a spectacular manner. It's sending two teams to the IHSA state finals for the first time since the debate program began just five years ago. To make it more spectacular, both McHenry teams entered in the sectional tournament qualified and will go downstate. This year's varsity squad of Ruth Snyder and Russ Crit tenden came off a 5-5 showing at NIU two weeks ago to qualify in the 28-team sectional with an impressive 11-1 record. They scored 2-0 victories over Rock- ford Auburn, Crystal Lake Central, Peoria, Rockford-East and Woodruff, and tied 1-1 with Peoria Manual. The junior varsity team of Jill Hutchinson and Derek Gilbert qualified with an 8-4 record. They defeated Rock- f o r d - B o y l a n , P e o r i a - Richwoods; split ballots against Crystal Lake Central and Woodruff; and lost 0-2 to first place Peoria Manual. Jill and Derek were 2-2 after their first three rounds and managed a 6-0 comeback. Any one loss in those last three rounds would have kept them from qualifying. The IHSA sectional at Belvidere, with 28 teams, is the largest in Illinois and sent ten teams downstate for the finals. Other local schools sending teams downstate were Crystal Lake South and Belvidere. State finals will be held April 5-7 at Illinois State university at Normal. Debate coach is Gloria Burke, teacher at East cam pus. Board Positions Merit Support Of Interested Voters Saturday, April 14 is the day when board members of School Districts 15 and 156 will be elected. These people will determine the policies you and your children will be governed by, during their learning time in school. Considering that school budgets requisition the highest amount of tax moneys spent locally, it is very important that board members to be voted in are knowledgeable, con scientious, and very much aware of conditions in the schools. ' " . Try to find out the views of the candidates, and then make your decision as to the best qualified. Our first priority should be to provide the best education available for our young people. Do your share by voting on April 14. The school board members give so much of their time and energy at no pay, that our share of putting an X on the ballot is really miniscule. ACTIVITIES AND AWARDS Tricia Goebel was awarded a letter "M" at the Sports banquet, for her membership on the high school swimming team. She was also in the happy production of "Kiss Me Kate" put on by the drama depart ment of West campus. This meant many long hours of rehearsal for all the young people involved. Now Tricia is taking on another project. She is teaching disco dancing. Members of the Moose Lodge will benefit from Tricia and her friends' ex pertise on Wednesdays after Easter. Even father Brian Baker will be getting into that act. Congratulations to a very busy and talented young lady. LAKEMOOR PERMITS Lakemoor permits what? Now is the time for a blood test at the vet's, to determine a clean bill of health before the heartworm pills are given. Protect your dog and the other pets by p r e v e n t a t i v e m e d i c i n e . Heartworm is fatal unless treated, and successful treatment depends on early detection. We know from Whimper's illness, how painful this condition is for dog and family. With all dog owners giving the daily pills during mosquito season, a lot of pain and heartache will be averted. BLOOD PRESSURE INCREASE The free blood pressure screening at Lakemoor on the third Monday of last month, must have added to R.N. Vickie Behan's reading. Because of the extreme fog on the nineteenth, Vickie decided to take the "safer" way home, via Route 31. Normally, 15 to 20 minutes finds our heroine home, but this night the trip took an hour and a half of driving in near zero visibility. We are thankful for her safety, and also for Vickie's dedication to the continued health of our community.
