Senior Sharon Smith (above) and junior Sue Hutchinson shared the MVP award for girls basketball this past season at McHenry high school. The two young ladies were presented their awards at the annual banquet held last week at West campus. Smith, an all-conference performer, was also selected co-captain along with Annette Dercole. The meet scheduled for last Saturday was cancelled and now all the coach can do is hope and pray for some sunshine. The veteran mentor has one senior on his squad, Rich Sund, but is hopeful that the un­ derclassmen can come through for him this season. Practice has been limited to West campus and indoor courts at Fox Lake, but it won't be long before tennis balls will be filling the air outside at the school. Girls Swim Team Receives Awards Two McHenry Warriors and four Johnsburg Skyhawks were among 32 players named Monday night to the All-County Basketball team. Selected by sportswriters and editors from newspapers throughout the county, those players chosen for the team, their parents, coaches and athletic directors were honored at a banquet at West campus. Senior forwards Tim Zeller and Brett Thomas were the two Warriors chosen for the team. Zeller was named to the second team, while Thomas was honorable mention for Class AA schools. Johnsburg center Don Bentz and guard Scott Dixon, both seniors, were placed on the first team for Class A schools. Junior forwards Tom Schoenig and Chris Dixon of the Skyhawks were listed as honorable mention. Master of Ceremonies Dick Rabbitt and Northwestern university head basketball coach Rick Falk presentedd first and second team members were with plaques and honorable mention players with certificates commending their achievements. Falk was the guest speaker at the banquet. Coach Bob Kies of Johnsburg was honored as Class A coach of the year. Kies led the first year Skyhawks to a Shark conference championship and a second place finish in the Oregon sectional. Former McHenry assistant coach Gary Collins was honored as Class AA Coach of the Year. Collins led his Crystal Lake South Gators to a third place finish in the Fox Valley conference and a regional championship. South was also in its first year in existence.
