APRIL 6,1979 called to order by president, Grace Latimer. Chaplain, Lauretta Homo led the members in the Prayer For Peace'. The flags were posted by Midge Scharf, in the absence of sergeant-at-arms, Betty Bockman and by assistant sergaent-at-arms, Laurie Latimer. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the group sang the 'Star Spangled Banner", led by Maria Guet- tler, music chairman, at the piano. Margarita Correa of Columbia, one of this years McHenry A.F.S. students gave a very interesting talk, telling the members about her country. Caroline Smith, who spent a year in Japan, as an American Abroad, told us about her experiences as she attended school and lived in Japan. The Unit presented Margaritd with a donation for the local A.F.S. chapter. Caterina Simon of Italy arrived too late to give her talk. Commander Stan Burlack presented Midge Scharf, BanH on it! Children and Youth chairman with a citation, presented from the Department of Illinois, American Legion, for her outstanding work with the children of the community. A donation was made to a new program *of both the American Legion and Auxiliary. This program, Special Olympics, is an in­ ternational program of physical fitness, sports training and athletic competition for mentally retarded children and adults. This program con­ tributes to the physical, social and psychological development of mentally retarded par­ ticipants. Community Service Chair­ man. Helen Birmingham, an­ nounced that she had taken treats to the patients at Valley Hi Nursing home in Hartland. The members were reminded of the semi-annual Chicken Dinner to be held on Sunday, May 20. A donation was given to the district president's special project, the Seeing-Eye dog. Birthday greetings were ex­ tended to Dottie Messer, Pearl Cooper, Tina Boeker and Helen Birmingham. Pearl Cooper and Evelyn Osmon were winners of the Veteran's Craft door prizes and Arlean Kizer was not present to receive the at­ tendance award. The McHenry unit voted unanimously to provide a „ $500.00 Nurses' scholarship in the memory of past president Frances Matchen. This money will be sent to the Department of Illinois and it is hoped that some boy or girl from the McHenry area will apply for this scholarship. The rules for the Nurses' scholarship were recently published in the local newspapers or more in­ formation may be obtained from Mrs. Lydia Fenner, past president's parley chairman.
