Dixon Secretary of State Illinois law states very" clearly that every motor vehicle of the first and second divisions must have a working horn capable of being heard under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet Some motorists, however, do not realize that the horn is intended to enable them to warn pedestrians and other motorists of their presence so they won't unknowingly make some move which might possibly cause an accident. Just because you have a horn on your vehicle does not give you the right to honk it every time some traffic situation irritates you. Frightening people by sudden, loud blasts on a horn may cause an ac cident, rather than prevent one. A careful driver will sound his horn only when he thinks it 's necessary. Always remember that the horn should be used as a warning device, not a dejnand for the right-of-way (A ccrpy of the Rules of the Roaa will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Prelates and scholars tra veled great distances to be at Padua university, Italy, for the graduation of the 32-year-ol(t Venetian woman. "She was as-; beautiful as an angel,"- P r o f e s s o r C a r l o R i n a l d i n i - wrote in his diary, "and she spoke Greek, Latin, French and Spanish with perfect ease " He had the honor of placing the. laurel crown on her head, the doctor's ring on her finger and the teacher's ermine cape on[ her shoulders. Elena's father was both wealthy and influential. Wheri he first asked Cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo, bishop of Padua and chancellor of the university, to enroll his daughter in the doctoral program, the churchman laughed, saying, "We would be held up to the mockery of the world." But Elena's father (would not take no for an answer arfd the cardinal finally enrolled her to study for a ^degree in philosophy. The rest is history. In spite of all the prejudices of the day against women, Elena persevered until she excelled in her studies She spoke several languages fluently and mastered philosophy, theology, mathematics and astronomy Unfortunately, after her graduation she contracted tuberculosis and had to leave the damp climate of Venice and return to Padua where she spent her time caring for the needy as a Benedictine Oblate lay parish worker Her death came at the early age of 38, and she was soon forgotten Had it not been for a Benedictine abbess named Metild Pynsent who came across her name while in Rome in the 1850's, we would never have known a thing about Elena Cornaro This British nun took the trouble to research her life and write her biography Because of her book, in 1904 Vassar college in Poughkeepsie, New York, had a stained glass window made in Elena's honor Ruth Crawford, a 1912 Vassar graduate, read about Elena and went to Padua to stir new interest in her. convincing university officials and the Benedictine monks of St. Justina Abbey, where she is buried, to celebrate her 300th anniversary. And celebrate they did. What I find so moving in Elena's story is that the first woman to achieve a c k n o w l e d g e d a c a d e m i c equality with men on her own merits was a holy person She involved herself with those who needed her help, the poor people in her home town Elena Cornaro used the talents God gave her not only to learn about things, but also to care about people 'For a free copy of the Christopher News Notes.
