Church Women To Meet * Twice Told Tales Representing Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, at an American Lutheran Church Women's convention are left, to right, Berneice Spruth, Mila Bauer, Ruth Staveteig, Ruth Wilkinson and Donna Haack. The American Lutheran Church Women of the North Chicago Conference of the Illinois district will meet in convention at St. Mark's Lutheran church, Mt. Prospect, Friday, Apnl 6. Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, McHenry, will be represented by Donna Haack, Shirley Kivley, Edna Pearson, Rosemary Schneider, Bernice Spruth, Judy White and Ruth Wilkinson. The day long convention will meet under the stewardship theme for the year. The speaker will be Mrs. Fern Gudmestad, second vice- president of the American Lutheran Church Women. Each church is to bring a banner which they have made to carry in the processional at the beginning of the convention. The opening gun in the coming city election was fired when a petition was circulated and filed on behalf of the candidacy of John R. Knox for mayor to oppose the present mayor, Peter Wm. Frett, who also filed for reelection. Rudolph E. Johnson, president of the McHenry chapter of the Izaak Walton league, informed the Plain- dealer that the first of five carloads of fish is expected to arrive here this week from the state hatcheries to be dumped into Fox River and the nearby lakes, including McCullom Lake. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 13, 1939) The last of the Spring elec­ tions is scheduled to be held April 18, being the regular city election, at which time can­ didates for four aldermanic posts and a police magistrate will be voted on in the three wards. There are no contests listed on the ballots - It's now Lieutenant Philip Guinto. A deserving member of the state police is advanced from sergeant to the next highest position The new lieutenant received his first appointment as a patrolman in 1927 from the late Governor Small and has carried on all these years with an enviable record. Although residing „ in McHenry, Lieut. Guinto has been stationed in Chicago for the past few years, his territory being from Washington boulevard to the north Cook county line and from Lake Michigan to the western line of Cook county, being one of the largest districts in Illinois as to populatio^. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 8, 1954) McHenry is one of ten Illinois communities to be visited by the Unviersity of Illinois Varsity Men's Glee club on its Easter concert. Two young McHenry men. Bill Weber, son .of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Weber, a junior in the university's School of Agriculture, and Jack Wirtz, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Wirtz, a sophomore, enrolled in the School of Music, are members of the club. Hickory Creek Gomar, which was named Ail-American junior yearling bull two years ago, was sold at acution for $11,000. Interested dairy cattle farmers from throughout the nation have been at McCullom Lake this week to bid on the choice animals at Hickory Creek farms. Clinaude's Golden Boy received the first place ribbon and trophy at the speciality show in Kansas City recently. The dog is owned by Robert St. Luke Wink el of McHenry. Its sire is the famous Champion Cinaude's Scoop, owned by Peter J. Fisher of the Country Gub subdivision. Incumbent H. Walter Anderson failed to be returned to office after long service as township clerk. He lost to Albert Adams by more than 200 votes. Charles Weingart won over Thomas Birmingham for assistant supervisor. Top vote getter was James H. Wegener, who polled 2,265 votes for a seat on the board of auditors. By a unanimous vote of 27-0. a levy of $62,160 for the Town fund was approved at the an­ nual McHenry township meeting.
