(Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This ar ticle is "Coping - Behavioral Disorders in 3-5 Years Old -- Treatment.) If the causes of the behavior problem in the child are due to a correctable physical problem, the behavior can be changed simply by treating the physical problem. Certainly, a complete physical examination is the first step in treating any behavior problem. Even if the unacceptable behavior is due to a phsycial problem, the child may have built up a behavior pattern that has become a habit. In this case the habit may remain even if the physical problem is corrected. If, as is usually the case, the problem is emotionally based and not physical, the resolution of the problem is more difficult. Remember that children react totally, and that their behavior can i>e a reaction to a situation that parents assume the child is not aware of. For instance, if there is a marital problem that parents are "keeping" from the children, the parents assume that this can have no relation to the child's problem. Children, however, have very good in stincts, and can sense a pro blem and react strongly to it without being aware of what they are reacting to. It is im portant, then, to get help with any problem in the relationship between parents, even if it seems unrelated to the behavior problem in the child. Although it is possible for a therapist to treat a child in dividually. the more severe behavior problems seem to respond more quickly to a total family approach including other children in the family. In that way the parents can also have a chance to talk about their feeling of frustration and anger in dealing with the behavior problem. Next: The Ulcer Personality. POET'S CORNER "I WASNT THERE" It wasn't I that day "0 LORD" Who nailed You to a Cross. Who pierced Your hands with iron SPIKES For a si if ul world so lost. Lord You know I wasn't there that day When with thorns they crowned Your head. Or, when they handed to You a cup of gall When You asked for water instead. I didn't stone You with stones O' Lord Or cause You a burden to bear. It WAS SOME ONE ELSE WHO DID THESE THINGS For Lord I wasn't there.. I wasn't one of the crowd on the road Who mocked and taunted You. But itseems I heard, when You whispered these words "They know not what they do." You paid the price as we all know On a cross of suffering and shame. Who of us can look upon Your face And say I am not to blame. It is the same today, as it was even then In my heart O'Lord I have lied. I was in the crowd that watched that day When You were so crucified. For today I admit, that I am a poor sinner, Forgiveness is just now my plea. I did make mock and taunt You LORD In that far eff GALILLEE. It was my hand that stoned You LORD » Your CROSS should have been my load. I did drive the spikes into Your heart From which Your Life's blood flowed ldid drive the nails into Your poor hands And I caused You anguish and pain. But 111 try my best, from this day forth To shov that You died not in vain. Bs telle Harmon Baldwin 1306 North Court street LETIZIA FINANCIAL CORP.
