Pictured here is a scene from the Passion play to be held at St. Thomas church on Good Friday, April 13, at 8 p.m. The play is entitled "The Nail". From left are Annas (John Saenz of Johnsburg) charging Jesus (Cary Lewis of Crystal Lake) with blasphemy. Soldier (Mike Schroeder of McHenry) witnesses the ^condemnation. An original Passion play for 1979 will be presented by the young people of St. Thomas the Apostle parish in Crystal Lake and surrounding communities Good Friday, April 13, at 8 p.m. at St. Thomas Oak street church (corner of Oak street and Route 176 in Crystal Lake). Door will open at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge but donations will be accepted at the door to help defray the costs of the costumes and -props. The play is a story of the passion, suffering and death of Jesus and what effect it has on the lives of individuals in 1979. The story begins with the Annunciation - the announcing - of the Angel Gabriel to Mary ' that she has been chosen to be . the mother of God. The play focuses on the importance of man making sense out of death before he can make sense out of life. For believers who climb their own Calvary and carry their cross, out of love for him, can turn a splintered old rugged cross into a life of victory. This Passion play is a faithful attempt to make real to more people the ultimate demon stration of God's concern for His creation, that people believe is represented in the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus. Costumes are being made by cast members themselves and women of the parish. Music includes some original as well as those from "Abba Father", "Take It As Gift" and the "Wiz". It is the day Jesus was crucified, according to the records. And whether one belongs to this or that church, or any church, it is one of the major days of history. ' Even for those who doubt the miracles, the life of Jesus is greatly admired, and his teachings generally respected and admired. For those millions of faithful, Good Friday, or Holy Friday (which seems a better name for it), is a painful day of faithful observance. It is shortly followed by the glorious Christian Easter, of course,'when Jesus, according to St. Mat thew's gospel, rose from his grave. That gives Good Friday (the Anglo-Saxons called it Long Friday) a happy outcome, one upon which the world of Christians has long based its faith. The Easter weekend is, therefore, a logical, appropriate time to recall and study the life and teachings of Jesus.
