STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD EARL WALSH' So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR Easter is just a few steps away, but don't worry about a new bonnet or wardrobe. The time has not come to store your winter clothes away. Memory brings us back to Easter Sunday mornings when every woman or girl wore a hat to church. The biggest worry was rain Men never made much of a splash in styles. But. oh, those girls! They didn't need a marching band to put on an Easter parade. You can't please em all. Those with new outfits will pray for a sunny Sunday. Those who will wear their old clothes will be praying agin' 'em. Lke Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny still lives. For the sake of the little children, I hope he keeps hop-hop-hopping along forever. Mothers will be busy coloring eggs. If Daddy misses out, he can plan a trip to a night club where Bunnies of a different variety prevail. When we were kids. Easter was the day to bring out the box where we saved candy all during the lenten season. Giving up candy was the supreme sacrifice. Before Easter, the super stitious ones will face Friday the 13th. Watch out for icy patches and don't walk under a ladder. Worst of all is that income tax payments are due on the glorious day of Easter There ought to be a law. One nice nurse warned me recently with concern -- "We don't want you to fall off the table.". Mayme Buss phoned to apply for the job as our letter opener, referring to our mention of letters following vacation. On second thought maybe she was anticipating a bundle of negative notes. All joking aside, Mayme never fails to offer en couragement. One of my favorite people offered tickets for the Sox opening game, but the fates had me grounded from such a trip. Just as well not to see that 10- 2 loss to Toronto. Hope the Sox pitchers got that walkitis out of their systems. You don't walk 12 batters and win the ball game. Tomorrow is another day. Wish it could be like a recent closing in a letter from friends - - "have a good day -- every day." That mama duck stayed around, laved some eggs in a nest in our yard and is nc w hatching There will be some little quackers around here I have a watch that gains five minutes a day and an alarm clock that loses the same. Don't ask me what time it is. When I mentioned a stupid accident, a professional analyst said. "All accidents are stupid". Dick Rabbitt, who covers MCHS sports, attached a note to his Wednesday reports saying he will have no sports news for this issue. Dick is packing his golf clubs and heading for a warmer climate. On a sunny day, he golfs near home. McHenry Recreation Ladies Tuesday Nite League * 4-10-79, 7 p.m. AVERAGES OR BETTER: S. McClory, 427, K. Bonato, 385; P. Jay Grover and Jim McAndrews won the first set 6-2 and were then beaten 4-6. In the third set, the pair rebounded and won 6-3. The only match Marian lost in the series was number two doubles. Jay LeCoque and Chris Juswik lost 6-1 and 6-2. OASEMU * • * BY PETE FRITCHIE LAKELAND -- Believe it or not, the old pros in the training camp of the Detroit Tigers are saying the Yankees don't have the best pitching in the league. They see Baltimore's staff as superior. "Louis Tiant, at his age, isn't going to add that much. Don Gullett is highly suspect. Catfish Hunter may be better. But he came on nicely in the second half of the season last year and can't do too much better than that. Messersmith is gone. If anything happens to Gossage-and he has been off and on, that staff is in real trouble. Guidry can't be any better than last year--probably not as good." That's what one hears. Reggie Jackson is uttering his usual childish nonsense, saying he'll quit (and give up all that money?) if made a D.H. Dave Parker arrives at Bradenton spouting similar big-mouth talk (learned from boxer Ali?)-that he's the games greatest, etc. Maybe he is, though.
