According to Ormel Prust, Business and Industrial chairman, some 13 million copies of this leaflet are being distributed nationwide during April, which is Cancer Control month. "We use our annual visits to friends, neighbors and business associates to help acquaint the public about the importance of early cancer detection and prompt treat­ ment. This year our special message is, "You can help protect yourself against cancer by What You Do or Don't Do." He said. "Here are the do's and don'ts: Don't smoke cigarettes; Don't oversun. Do breast self-examination; Do get a Pap test , Do take a Guaiac Test; Do have a complete checkup; Do have an oral Exam; "We're trying to alert men and women to special cancer risks and inform them about valuable tests. While distributing the new leaflet, our volunteers will be happy to explain each of these points. For example, many people may not know about the guaiac test because it is just beginning to be widely publicized. This simple test of small stool samples can help detect early colorectal cancer when it is very treatable." The eductional message of the ACS campaign reflects a growing awareness that an individual has to be part of his or her health care - that good t^ealth is not the job of doctors alone. > "We know of some of the ways of preventing cancer - for example by quitting cigarettes or avoiding excess sun - it's up to the individual to make use of the information," he said. The annual crusade also raises funds for the three fold ACS program of research, education and service to cancer patients and their families. "We're trying to fight cancer in every way we can. Hybrid fish do occasionally occur in the wild, h9wever. A common cross is between green sunfish and bluegill. Usu­ ally these hybrids are more de­ sirable fish since they grow faster and get bigger than either ofthe parent species. Fish hybridization has long been an area of interest to biol­ ogists. According to information from Mercury outboards' fish­ ing department, work with trout began in the late I800's and has led to at least one notable hy­ brid, the splake. A cross between brook trout and lake trout, the splake has the desirable characteristic of faster growth. Also, splake are able to repro­ duce naturally in the wild, a rare occurrence among hybrid fish. Brook trout and lake trout do not crossbreed naturally, how­ ever. In the wild, these two fish have vastly different spawning needs. The two species never meet, and if they did, a cross is highly unlikely. Another hybrid which is be­ coming more popular among anglers is the white bass/ striped bass cross. This fish, introduced into many southern reservoirs, grows rapidly to eight or 10 pounds, feeds voraciously and is easily caught by anglers. It serves a dual purpose in many places as a sport fish for anglers and as a means of con­ trolling shad populations'which threaten to overcrowd many lakes.
