Dogs are out doing the same thing as their human owners. We are starting to get many "dog calls" about people's pets running loose around the neigh borhoods, bothering other people and messing up property. We have had a large problem with stray dogs in the past few years, and it looks like we are going to have another problem this year. I should remind all of you pet owners of the following local laws governing the problem of dogs running loose. First, all pets must be licensed by the County Rabies Control; in other words, they must have their rabies tag, and it must be current. Any dog found not to have a McHenry county rabies tag for the current year will be impounded by the Rabies Control unit until the animal is given a rabies shot, and the owner of the animal will be WINN PHILLIPS CARS-«-MAMS We at Century 21 Car* Real Estate, Inc. are pleased to present you with oor weekly series of informative Real Eitate Articles. If you have ever seen a child crying over the loss of his pet, it should be enough to make sure that you never let your pet run loose where it could be hit by a car Last year, 1 was working on the day shift when a lady came into the police department with a small paper bag. and asked me if I could dispose of what she had in the bag. It belonged to her husband, who had kept the item for almost thirty-five years. Since he was gone, she didn't want it around the house any more because she didn't know anything about it, and was afraid to even handle it When I opened the bag. I found about fifty rounds of am munition that was very old, from the second World War, and what looked like a live hand grenade! Having been in the service myself, I knew a little about handling hand grenades, but I had never seen one like this. I was more than a little nervous about just how safe it really was, being as old as it was. When I removed it from the bag, I was greatly relieved to find that it was a "dummy" practice grenade, one that the military had used to train its people in proper usage I thanked the lady for bringing in the items, and I told her that we would properly dispose of them for her. It started me thinking about how many other people may have brought home other "war souvenirs ' . and about how long these things may ha\ < been around the house becoming more dangerous a*- the years pass I want you al l to know that : you have anything in your homes that you do not want anymore, such as ammunit ion, hand grenades, knives swords guns, e tc . , and you want to dispose of these i tems, please feel f ree to br ing them to the pol ice department , or ask to come to your home and pick them up We wil l d ispose o | them for you \ \ e have a place for a l l such mater ia ls which i: the Bomb Disposal uni t a t Koit "Sheridan, and they wil l dest ioy any and al l i tems that we turn over to them It i s my t ip ders tanding that gun powdei and other types of explosives become very unstable with great age. and they can become very dangercvus. Most disturbing, .however, is the increased rate of smoking by girls between 12 and 18 which nearly doubled between 1968 and 1974. "As we begin our annual educational and fund-raising Crusade we urge all women as well as the men in their lives to give thoughtful consideration to these serious facts," declared Mrs. Ilavern GregoryJ Public- Education chairman of the McHenry Unit of the American Cancer society. Heart disease, stroke, em physema, cancers of the mouth and larynx are just a few of the other serious diseases women smokers are prey to. Women smokers also spend 15 percent more days sick in bed w ith less serious ailments, and lose nearly three times as many work days as women who don't smoke "Smoking by pregnant women is particularly hazardous for their unborn chi ldren." she said "The nicot ine and carbon monoxit i i in c igaret te smoke retards t ie unborn baby 's growth an affects i ts bir th weight i woman whu smoke. i«i .> greater chance of having s t i l lborn infant than the woma» who does not "That ' s one of the reasons th* American Cancer society ha intensif ied i ts campaign against smoking through a new f ive-year program cal ie . i Target 5.
