SECTION 2 - PAGE 2 -1*1.A1NDKAI.KK - FRIDAY. APRIL 20,1979 The World Of Commodities A Weekly Fondomentol Report Grains: Exports Below Expectations Weigh On Soybean Complex. Soybean complex furtures prices were under selling pressure through mid-week. The major force weighing on the market was the second consecutive week of exports below expectations. In the week ending April 6, U.S. exports were 12.3 million bushels versus 19.4 last year and expectations of 15-20 million bushels. In spite of the suspension of new registrations, Brazil exported 32 thousand tonnes of soybeans versus 11 thousand tonnes last year. In the weeks ahead, soybean exports are expected to maintain a pace nearly equal to last year's levels. Official monthly data show Brazil exported 38.4 thousand tonnes CRYSTAL LAKE UPHOLSTERING --James W. Main & Prairie (Rear) Crystal Lake of soyoil in February, up from 21 thousand last year, and record large for the month of February. Preliminary weekly export data suggest Brazil exported a record large quantity for the month of March as well. In the five week period ending April 8, 92.6 thousand tonnes were exported, versus 54.8 during the same five weeks last year. Increased supplies of Brazilian soybean oil and Malaysian palm oil relative to year-ago levels should wejgh increasingly on soybean oil futures prices in the months ahead. On April 23, the USDA is scheduled to release its April 1 Soybean Stocks in All Positions Report. We expect the Report to show stocks at 870-885 million bushels versus 849 last year, if stocks are below 870, the report may be considered bullish. Stocks higher than 885 may be con sidered bearish as it would confirm that the crop is un derestimated and that an up ward revision may be necessary. Corn Prices Remain Relatively Strong. New developments make us reluctant to be short in the com market before the 1979 corn crop has been successfully planted. Export demand continues to be strong with the USSR taking more corn than earlier expected. Livestock profits remain extremely high and are encouraging herd expansion and the feeding of cattle to heavier weights. Based on past buying patterns they may take a total of 7-9 million tonnes compared to our previous projections of 4-6 and 1977-78 imports of 11.2 million tonnes. The first indication of the impact of high livestock prices and wide profit margins on corn feeding could come in the April 1 Stocks in All Positions Report to be issued April 23. We expect the report to show corn stocks of 4375-4425 million bushels compared to 6197 in January and 3877 in April 1, 1978. If stocks come in at less than 4375 it could in dicate heavier than expected feed usage. On April 16, the USDA is scheduled to release its spring planting intentions report. We expect that report to show acreage between 79.5-80.5 million acres compared to 80.6 in the January intentions report and 79.7 a year ago. Livestock: Cattle On Feed Report Due. Cattle futures trended sharply higher over the past week. The continued current condition of feedlots, combined with significant reductions in other classis of slaughter, are primarily responsible. Federally in spected cattle slaughter averaged 116 thousand head per day last week, compared to 137 thousand head a year ago, which is equivalent to a 15 percent decline. In other developments, the April 1 Cattle on Feed Report is scheduled to be released next ge< Thursday, April 19. We expect the report to indicate a con tinued current condition with regard to marketable fed cattle supplies. Following a tem porary downturn during late March, cattle prices have once again turned higher. Given our expectations for a reduced level of feedlot inventories along with continued sub stantial declines in other classes (cows and non-fed steers and heifers) of slaughter, we continue to believe prices will trend higher during the period ahead. We suggest re-establishing long positions in both live cattle and feeder cattle. Hog Slaughter To Trend Higher. Hog futures prices trended slightly higher this week as continued strength in cattle futures prices supported hog futures. One factor which projects to weigh on fall hog futures prices relative to nearby contracts, is an ex pected uptrend in hog slaughter relative to the previous year. October hog slaughter could overrun last year's level by 24 percent compared to a 15 percent increase in the early summer period. John S. Manager of Veterinary Services Norden Laboratories ^Taring For The Older Horse As horses grow older, certain organs and body systems age faster than others. The wise horse owner will make ad justments in the older animal's diet *tad daily care to com pensate for these physical changes. Generally the horse's teeth, digestive system and joints are the first areas to show signs of advancing age. The adult horse has twenty- four broad, relatively flat molars which crack and grind its food. With age, these teeth can wear unevenly, so that grain and hay are not chewed properly. The appearance of whole grains of corn or oats in the manure and excessive salivation are generally signs of dental troubles. When feed is not cracked and digested, the horse does not receive the nutrients contained in the feed. The solution is to have the horse's teeth floated (sharp points removed) so that feed is properly chewed. Your veterinarian can easily float a horse's teeth, using a special file. There are also commercial horse .feeds available con taining cracked corn and crimped oats. Grain prepared in this fashion is easier to digest. Many older horses have internal parasites. Stomach and intestinal worms may absorb so much nutrient material that the horse may lose weight even when fed good quality hay and grain. This is why aging horses need regular dosing with a product effective against internal parasites. Your veterinarian can advise on the appropriate worming schedule and product for your horse. If you choose to retire your faithful mount to pasture, don't forget to check the horse at least once a day. When pastured with younger animals, an older horse can't always compete for feed and may gradually weaken. You may want to feed the older horse his grain separately. Any horse that spends a lot of time out of doors should be regularly groomed and examined in a dry stall. There are numerous hoof infections that begin when a horse spends a long time in a muddy field. A slight irritation that passes unnoticed under some caked mud can cause a serious infection later. Treat leg cuts and sores promptly and use bandages if your veterinarian recommends them. Arthritis is probably the most common ailment seen in older horses. Joints become inflamed and the horse is noticeably stiff. Although your veterinarian can prescribe various drugs to control the inflammation, there is no permanent cure for ar thritis. A dry stall, well-drained pasture and regular moderate exercise all aid in keeping the horse's joints flexible. If you decide to sell an aging horse, be selective about prospective buyers.
