The Institute of Natural Resources, Illinois Office of Education and Illinois State Fair invite Illinois residents to enter the Illinois Solar Hot Water Design competition. Innovative design approches to solar hot water heating will exhibit and compete for awards at the 1979 Illinois State Fair (Aug. 9 - 19). They are looking for func tional solar hot water demonstration models that are low cost and simply operated. They are also looking for durability, effectiveness and aesthetics. There are divisions for Grade 7 Students and Grade 10 Students. In addition residents over 18 can enter the in dependent category. Entrants from both divisions will compete for the $1,000 Grand Prize. $5,000 in awards will be given. Contact me for more in formation. Narrow Row Soybeans- Soybean producers now using 36-inch rows or wider could pick up another 10 percent in yields simply by reducing row spacing to at least 30-inch in tervals. Research indicates the increased yields are possible, and without increasing planting populations. Weed control is a must in narrow row soybeans. Narrow rows should not be used in fields with known hard-to- control weeds, like Johnson grass or other perennials. Extension soybean specialists suggest preplant or preemergency grass herbicide with narrow rows. Grasses are the worst problem in soybeans and to date there is no postemergence herbicide for grass control. Broadleaf weed control can be obtained from soil applied or foliar herbicides. The narrow row soybeans will help themselves, too, because faster shading of the soil helps suppress weeds. It also helps the soil retain moisture needed by the soybean plants. As for using different row widths for corn soybeans, I suggest that when new corn equipment is bought, producers should consider machinery for 30 inches or less. A logical time to change to narrow soybean rows is when you go shopping for new equipment for corn. Narrow row soybeans are not for everyone. Good management is an essential ingredient. That includes weed control and selection of a proper variety. Vigorous Soybeans Pay Off-If you want a good and uniform stand of soybeans, make sure you choose a vigorous seed this spring. Cold germination testing is about the best way to deter mine the relative vigor of two or more soybean seedlots. Seeds having the highest cold germination test scores tend to produce the best stands and yields. The advantage of using vigorous seed is most apparent in seedbeds with stress factors, such as cold temperatures, crusted soil and herbicide residue. Under ideal con ditions-in a seedbed without stress factors-seedlots of high and low vigor tend to produce similar stands and yields. However, it's rare to find an ideal seedbed. Generally, the cold ger mination tests results won't be as high as those from the warm test. The closer the results are, the more likely the seed has a high vigor level. For example, a 90 percent warm and an 80 percent cold germination means the seed is vigorous. However, a seedlot with a cold germination score 30 to 40 percent below the warm test result indicates a lack of vigor. One final note on seed vigor testing is have both tests taken at the same lab. Seeds are tested in soil and not all soil is the same from lab to lab. Sheepman's Holiday Planned- Plans for a second annual Sheepman's Holiday and Symposium are underway, according to Gary Ricketss, University of Illinois Extension sheep specialist. The Illinois Lamb and Wool Producers. Inc., and the U of I Cooperative Extension Service, who co- sponsor the event, have selected Jan. 4-5, 1980 as the date for the symposium. Don Oswarld, Jr., Tremont, who served as chairman of the 1979 symposium, will continue as chairman of the 1980 event, notes Rickettes. Milk Production-Illinois and United States Milk Procution increased during the month of February. The estimated production in Illinois is up 3 percent while that of the United States is up 1 percent. The number of cows in Illinois average 4 percent grater than the 1978 figure while the U.S. the number of cows was off 1 percent. There are 236,000 milk cows in Illinois and 10.8 million head in the U.S. Land l'se-71.24 percent of the McHenry county land areas was reported in farms ac cording to the 1977 annual assessors farm census. The drop of 2690 acres of .7 of a percent from 1976. These figures are statistics compiled by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Ag. Statistics. Agriculture is the nations biggest industry and its largest employer. It's assets total $671 billion, about three-fourths of the capital assests of all manufacturing corporations in the United States. Between 14 and 17 million people work in some phase of agricultural from growing food and fiber to selling it at the supermarket. These facts are only several of thousands contained in the Fact Book of U.S. Agriculture- Misc. Publication No. 1063. Give us a call and we'll order you a copy. Feeding Bees-According to our State Bee Specialist, Elbert Jaycox, this is the time of year when colonies of honey bees most often run out of stored food and die of starvation. The bees made it through the winter buy did not have enough honey to meet the dual demands or rearing brood and keeping the brood nest warm. When rearing brood, bees can't turn down the thermostat-it must be set at 93 degrees to 95 degrees F. Car bohydrate food is required to produce the heat. Bees need spring feeding for other reasons, too. We may have removed too much honey and there was no nectar flow later. Also, the bees consume more food when there is a warm fall that allows flight later in the year. The bees continue to search for food but find very little. We had that condition last fall in Illinois and bees consumed above average amounts of food at that time. Soft candy or corn syrup used as the sole food of bees is toxic. We may find some undesirable effects even from high-fructose corn syrup if it provides the only stores for colonies. Granulated sugar is probably the best of the simple foods to give bees in an emergency. Sugar syrup made from white table sugar is the best all- around food for colonies if you have no cobs of honey to give them. More facts on this subject is in the Bees and Honey newsletter published monthly. I'll send you information of this newsletter and others in the ag newsletter service. Write or call, P.O. Box 431, Woodstock, 111. 60098, 338-3737 or 4747. A Traffic Hazard-I saw it turn off the side road on to the high way. It drew no special at tention since it was a quarter of a mile or so away. But I soon realized the hazard that I was quickly approaching. It was a pickup pulling a tractor with a loader attached. There were no lights on the tractor. There were no SMV emblems on the equipment. The truck lights were invisible from behind. His speed was 20 mph. Illinois law says all farm vehicles designed to travel 25 miles per hour or less must display a SMV emblem visible 500 feet away. Common sense says all farm vehicles except trucks should have a SMV emblem safety attached. Plan for a safe cropping season. Be equipped and be prepared. "Teenagers-Alcoholism" Yheme Of May Workshop "Teenagers and Alcoholism" is the theme of the Lake County Council on Alcoholism's workshop for professionals. The all-day workshop, co- sponsored by Fort Sheridan and the Lake County Juvenile Probation office, will take place Thursday, May 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Illinois Beach resort, Lake Front, Zion.
