* Defenders Promote Solar Contest No'lce STATE OF ILLINOIS A statewide solar hot water design competition is to be conducted this summer by the Illinois Institute of Natural Resources. In cooperation with this state agency, McHenry County Defenders will act as liaison in McHenry county, and in that capacity invite and urge residents to enter the com petition. Persons entering the com petition will construct low cost solar hot water demonstration models to be exhibited, tested and judged for merit during the 1979 Illinois State fair (Aug. 9- 19). Although the competition is open to all Illinois residents, Illinois students enrolled in intermediate, secondary and vocational education programs are especially encouraged to participate. A special com petition has been arranged for classes of elementary students (kindergarten through Grade 6) to assemble' and submit for judging a Solar energy Book. Booklets will be exhibited at the State fair in conjunction with the Illinois Solar Hot Water Design competition. First prize will be publication of the winning book. The Illinois State fair has reserved a large exhibition area specifically for this statewide competition. Cash awards totaling $5,000 will be presented to winners and all solar hot water design entrants will compete for the $1,000 grand prize. Meritorious designs will be recognized in a variety of categories based upon cost, performance, ease of operation and aesthetics. The award funds have been made available by the U.S. Depart ment of Energy. The theme of this year's State fair - "Illinois on Parade" - provides an ideal opportunity to exhibit functioning solar systems to the general public. Solar energy is often seen as a highly sophisticated, expensive technology that is beyond reach of the public. But traditionally, solar energy advancements have been initiated and developed by backyard in ventors and do-it-yourselfers with a little ingenuity and minimal capital investment. The Illinois Solar Hot Water Design competition is offered on a statewide basis to direct public attention toward solar energy as an option for today as well as tomorrow. Further information, registration blanks, and competition criteria packets may be obtained by calling McHenry County Defenders, 338-5539 or 338-1865. * kttar fpm, Aomc Scream and rage People have always dreaded death. But now, we deny that it even happens. Geoffrey Gorer, a British an thropologist, lost his Dad in the sinking of the Lusitania in World War I. To resolve his grief, he talked to others who had lost loved ones. He found two things in com mon: inability to grieve and the denial that death had occurred. Gorer concluded that just as sex was unmen tionable among the Victori ans, death is unmentionable today. He called this the "pornography of death." In his book, The Morning After Death, L. D. Johnson says "D-E-A-D is today's most obscene four-letter word . . . The unpardonable sin is to be sad." So, peo ple don't die; they "pass away" or "go to sleep." Men, especially, find it hard to grieve. The late Stewart Alsop, ill with leukemia, tells how "I began, for the first time in about 50 years, to cry. I was utterly astonished, and also dismayed. I was brought up to believe that for a man to weep in public is... a proof of unmanliness ... I ducked into our tiny bathroom, and closed the door, and sat down on the toilet and turned on the bath water, so nobody could hear me,and cried my heart out. Then I dried my eyes on the toilet paper and felt a good deal better" (Stay of Execution, p. 68). In the January 1971 issue of American Journal of Nursing, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross tells of a mother who's just lost her small child: She looked very numb, so 1 said to bee, "Yon look u though you need to scream." And she said, "Do you have a screaming room in the hospital?" She was serious. I said, "No, but we have a chapel," which was a silly answer because she Im mediately replied, "I need just the opposite. I need to scream and rage and curse. I've just been sitting In the parking lot and ' cursing and screaming at God. 'God, why do you let this hap pen to my child? ... to me?'" And I said, "Do it here. It's bet ter to do it with somebody than out in a parking lot all alone." Letting ourselves cry -- whether over death or ; whatever -- won't solve everything. But it's a first step* toward healing.
