Church Welcomes Members SUCTION 2 - PAlifc. I - PLAIN DEALER - KK1DAY, APRIL 27,1»7» € 111 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 25, 1929) Representative citizens of McHenry were granted a hearing by the county board of supervisors for the purpose of presenting a petition to the board, asking for an ap propriation for the proper lighting of the state bridge across the river at McHenry The state cannot light the bridge and as it is outside the corporation, the city annot legally light it and the Kiwanis club has pledged itself to raise by popular subscription if necessary, the cost of wiring the bridge. The new mayor and alder men were installed in their new positions at a special meeting of. the city council. With Mayor Frett presiding and Aldermen Doherty, Bonslett, Kreutzer and Stoffel present, a full board was constituted at this time. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May- 5, 1939) The house of representatives in Springfield by a vote of 123 to 19 passed a bill which will validate the placing of three Republican nominees for the Circuit court bench of the seventeenth judicial district. The senate had passed the measure by unanimous vote last week. Clarence Regner and Ber nard Freund were named to the new petit jury for the Circuit court. Robert Schaefer and Thomas Sutton, safety patrol boys of our local grade schools, were two of five boys in the county chosen ALEXANDER LUMBER CO. as outstanding members of the patrol systems. They will receive medals from the Chicago Motor club and be guests at a luncheon in that city which will be attended by more than 1,000 youngsters from ninety-six counties in Illinois and Indiana. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO £Taken from the files of April 29, 1954) A number of roads in the area were inundated with water and a large section was without lights in the worst electrical storm of the spring. Lightning struck in at least two spots. On west Washington street, a power line was hit. In the first and probably sharpest light ning the bell tower on St. Patrick's church was struck, knocking brick and tile shingles to the ground. Elmer Avaang, newly elected chairman of the county board of supervisors, announced chairman changes in eight oyt of the twenty standing com mittees. Math Schmitt was re named head of the election committee and also serves on the fees and salaries and purchasing committees. LeRoy Smith of McHenry was chosen head of the latter committee and is a member of the right-of- way committee, headed by Carl Hellstrom. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 23, 1969) Members of the C. of C. and guests attending the first general membership meeting of the year heard plans outlined for the McHenry of tomorrow President Larry Lund in troduced Mr. Grossman of Harlem Bartholomew & Associates, who centered his remarks on city planning, using slides to illustrate the city's growth and development projections to 1990. y Major growth area was defined as lying between the framework of the Fox Valley freeway to the south and High way 201 to the north. Projec tions also included develop ment of the Dutch Creek area, establishment of parks in marsh areas otherwise un suitable for housing because of drainage problems and enlargment of the state dam park- Parents of incoming fresh men to McHenry high school are invited to attend a meeting at the East campus to discuss the purpose and design of the modular schedule as well as course descriptions and discipline procedures. * * * * Balanced judgment is something one finds in few people. * * * * There's no way to ac curately predict what peo ple will do.
