Stacey, John and Barbara White, and their daughter Kim; seated, and Mrs. White's mother, Mrs. Gertrude Woerner; standing in the rear are David Page, Robert and Mrs. Georgiana Evertsen, and Andrew John White. Sunday, April 22, was a real blessing at the Alliance church, 3815 Bull Valley road, McHenry, as 12 new members were added to the church. They were received into membership and were greeted by the elders of the church and Pastor Gerald Robertson during the morning worship service. The Alliance church has been growing steadily this year. The average attedaiice in the morning services has been approximately 155 in recent months. Many have been in troduced to the church through the Alliance Messenger, a newspaper delivered to in troduce the church's stand in the Lord Jesus Christ, and giving times of services. There is a great love manifested among the mem bers and friends of the church. This same love is extended throughout the entire McHenry area. Saturday, April 21 a retreat was held at the church to search out ways and means to reach the entire community with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many were present and plans for a great outreach are in the making. Pastor Robertson welcomes any questions from McHenry area residents who want to know about the church. Pollution Fine Hearings The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold hearings in Chicago to give the public a chance to comment on proposed EPA regulations that govern the assessment and collection of penalties against certain types of air polluters. The penalties, required by Section 120 of the Federal Clean Air act, will apply to most stationary sources of air pollution, such as factories, refineries, and power plants. If proposed regulations are ap proved, EPA will assess the penalites through ad ministrative rather than court action. In each case, the penalty will equal the amount that an air polluter saved by not complying with clean air standards. The public hearings will be held May 7-8 in the Adams room of the Midland hotel, 172 West Adams street, Chicago. On May 7 the hearings will be in two sessions, one starting at 9:30a.m., the other at 7:30 p.m. On May 8 the hearing will start at 9:30 a.m. Persons interested in making a statement at these hearings are requested to: 1( file a notice of their intent to make a statement no later than 10 days prior to the hearing and 2) if practicable, submit five copies of their proposed statement no later than five days prior to the hearing. The notice of intent and the copies of the proposed statement should be sent to Robert Homiak, Division of Stationary Source En^ forcement (EN 341), U.S. EPA, 401 M Street SW, Washington, DC 20460. REPLACEMENT TAX Addressing a public meeting last Monday, Governor James R. Thompson listed three factors he feels are essential to finding a solution to the loss of corporate personal property tax money in Illinois. Thomp son said the replacement must allow fair allocation of the proceeds, must not create a new bureaucracy, and must be a direct replacement to impact essentially the same on those who pay it as under the tax it replaces. Thompson recently appointed a 15-member committee to discuss alter natives for the tax. SEE BEFORE YOU BUY. Today's Youth BY PATRICK DUDGEON Nasty Habit? Teenagers are smoking more despite the reduction in the number of adult smokers in the past couple of years, statis tics show. Approximately 54 mil lion Americans smoke but there are more people now, resulting in increased cigarette sales. Percentage-wise, the figure has actually gone down a few points among adults. However, teenage smoking statistics aren't quite as en couraging, according to the National Cancer Society. Pre viously, the problem was most predominant during the early years of high school. But recent research indicates youngsters at the age of 9 and 10 are picking up on a habit which could last a lifetime -- but one that will probably be shortened. According to one Department of Health, Education and Weliare study, the smoking trend is more prevalent among girls and is ap parently the result of "re belliousness." The study also re veals that: -Twenty-five percent of the teenage girls who smoked said they smoked marijuana, com pared with only three percent of the nonsmokers. -One-third of the smokers said they drink to get drunk, com pared with only four percent of the nonsmokers. -One-third of the smokers reported they hate school, com pared with 16 percent of the nonsmokers. In addition, the study also con cluded that teenagers who smoke are more apt to be C and D stu dents and have friends who smoke. UNLICENSED GRAIN DEALERS Illinois Agriculture Director John R. Block last week warned farmers not to trade with unlicensed grain dealers. Block said, "I urge every producer to use good business discipline in checking the licenses of those he deals with, and beyond that in checking and preserving scale tickets and warehouse receipts. Producers have in the past also gotten into difficulty by con tinuing to trade with a dealer who is known to be in economic difficulty, paying prices not in line with the market, or following unorthodox buying and selling practices, said Block. runer .AN INVITATION. xsac Wonder Lake State Bank (IN ORGANIZATION) Extends a cordial invitation to the residential and business community of the Wonder Lake area, to join them in an informative meeting concerning the new bank!
