SECTION 2 - PAGE I - PLAINDEA1.EK - WEDNESDAY. MAY 9. 1979 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 9, 1929) Forcing a rear door, bandits stole $2,000 worth of goods from the Nobby Style Shop on Green l Ireet, making a clean getaway with the theft not discovered until morning. A jinx seems to be hovering over Green street or Centerville, as it is com monly called, for this is the third robbery which occurred in the immediate vicinity during the past few years as the Ray McGee clothing store was robbed on two different oc casions in practically the same manner and just a few days previous the Citizens bank across the street closed its doors. The first tragedy' of the season and one of the worst in many years occurred at Pistakee lake when four lives were lost by drowning. Three men and a young boy had come from the Chicago area to spend the weekend fishing, which ended in tragedy. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 18, 1939) There's action in Johnsburg these days. Action is being taken by the Johnsburg Community club, under the leadership of its president, "Billy" Meyers, in promoting the dedication ceremonies for the new bridge. With a drive on for funds to defray expenses the date for the ceremony has been set for June 18. Thomas Sutton and Robert Schaefer, pupils of the local schools, were among the several hundred boys who attended the school safety patrol award banquet at the Knickerbocker hotel in Chicago. The young lads were guests of the Chicago Motor club, their reward for being outstanding members of the safety patrol in their respective schools. Y^ung fellows in the com munity are pleased to hear that the Foresters are sponsoring a baseball team. The boys have erected a backstop, secured from the Volo diamond, and are working hard to improve the playing field. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 13, 1954) The anti-pollution com mittee, recently formed, discussed the answer of State's Attorney Wicks to a recent letter sent to him by the committee asking his assistance in the matter. He quoted the 1951 State Legislature act as best fitting the problem and the committee expects to take action ac cording to his suggestions in the near future. M L. Schoenholtz and Miss Genevieve Knox were honored in recognition of their twenty- five years of service as eachers in District 15. Mr. Schoenholtz is now principal of the junior high school and Miss Knox teaches at Edgebrook. The staff of the McHenry Medical Group has recently been increased by the association of Dr. George Alvary, who is a graduate of the New York State College of Medicine, New York City. He served his internship at St. John's Episcopal hospital there and later became resident surgeon at Bellevue hospital, New York City. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 7, 1969) The McHenry Township Fire Protection district board of trustees announced the resignation of Edward Justen as chief, Mr. Justen has been a member of the fire department since December 1942. Glenn Peterson was named chief. He joined the department in July, 1955. When the Morgan stallion King's Top Man enters the show ring as part of the parade of stallions at the Mid- Continent Field day, he will carry with him a rich heritage closely interwoven with the history of McHenry county and the town of McHenry itself. Though he was bred and foaled in southern Illinois, his life and background return again and again to this area. King's Top Man is descended from the great Morgan stallion Colby's Young Green Mountain who was bred and kept just outside the town of McHenry all his life by Mr. N.S. Colby. Mother's Day The observance of Mother's Day is a recent one in the United States, beginning only in 1907, Then it was the idea of Miss Anna M. Jarvis, a Philadelphia school teacher, formerly of Grafton, West Virginia, that at least once a year sons and daughters should pay tribute to mothers. Miss Jarvis arranged for a special church service and suggested white carnations be worn by those attending. The observance, on the second Sunday in May, has rapidly spread to every part of the United States and the fact that it became custom in all the states only four years after it had been suggested testifies to the sentiment for such an observance in this country. In later years, the custom of wearing a white carnation on Mother's Day was changed. Those whose mothers were still alive wore red flowers, instead of white. First observed in the United States, Mother's Day has become an international occasion and mothers in every area of the world are now honored each year. More than anyone else, the mother who cares for home and her children is destined to influence the character and future of the country. And often this responsibility is combined with a back-breaking and steady ordeal of sewing, washing, mending, cleaning and teaching. It is to this mother, who dedicates her life to her home, her family and children, that the country owes a debt of gratitude. This mother represents the finest in our civilization. •CUSTOM DRAPES LOW-LOW PRICES 300 STYLES & PATTERNS TOWN!!
