Ron Lentine also came up with a sparkling play at his shortcenter position for the winners. Lentine somehow grabbed a hot grounder over * second and turned it into a nifty doubleplay. Greg Freund reminded baseball fans of ex-Cub Ron Santo as his "swan dive" slide to third fell 30 feet short. Freund then proceeded to d e m o n s t r a t e c o r r e c t baserunning during a rundown. Guess there must be some sacrifice in this life, so the garden can wait. Being an old pony boy who prefers a horse race to the roar of motors, the Kentucky Derby was my dish on Saturday af ternoon. Spectacular Bid ran a good race, but at this point shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as some of the greats like Secretariat. There must be a lot more to the Derby than two minutes of racing. Just think, 125 thousand (not including pickpockets) attended the big race and bet over 4 million bucks on the outcome. That's a big stack of hay in any man's barnyard. General Assembly was our horse until listening to Eddie Arcaro, who was hoisted into the saddle to win the derby five times. Don't look back, men! Keep running -- hard Now comes another female to take over in politics. A good looker with a winning smile has been chosen prime minister of Britain. Never thought golf matches could be so exciting on TV. Those long putts have a fellow putting body english on the path of the ball. Of course, TV will never take the place of a buggy ride over the course on a sunny day. As of this writing, the Cubs are on a home run binge and the Sox are hanging by their fingernails to protect early leads. Relief pitching now seems to be the name of the game. Since the White Sox game was not played in the afternoon as advertised, it seemed only right to watch the Cubs play Atlanta. Football! The Cubs won 14 to 13 in a display that saw both teams use throwers instead of pitchers. How could we know if somebody didn't tell us -- the Eskimos use 148 pieces in a game of dominoes. Of course, their nights are long. Trust you saw that little story in the 25-year items of the Plaindealer about Dan Justen and A1 Querhammer chaperoning the eighth grade class of St. Mary's school on a train ride to Washington, D C. I remember it well, Our son Jack was in that class. But, it has been 25 years and I still haven't figured how they p i c k e d t h o s e t w o f o r chaperones.
