Lindberg, 1912 Main, Spring Grove, for con struction of a four-bedroom residence with approximate value of $100,000 at 9605 Hillshire, Richmond. Rich mond Township. Fee~$294. John M. Paroubek, 121S. Lily Lake Road, McHenry, for construction of a detached garage with approximate value of $5,500. Nunda Township. Fee--$22. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 16, 1929) Peter W. Frett, former mayor of McHenry, was in Springfield where he attended the meeting of the state legislators and was in strumental in the framing of the Tice bill in which the amount of $179,325.91 was reappropriated for the con struction of a dam across Fox river between the site of the present dam and the original point of appropriation. The Fox river dam controversy for a time seemed destined to bring about the defeat of the proposition, the dispute being brought about by failure of the residents of Lake and McHenry counties to agree on the location of the dam. It was finally agreed by a large majority of Lake county residents that a new dam built at the present site of the old dam would handle the supply of water for the lake region very satisfactorily. The foreman of the Plain- dealer, John J. Ryan, 33, passed away in the Colonial hospital in Rochester, Minn., May 18. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 25, 1939) Carter Jenkins, chief engineer of the Illinois Division of Waterways, announced at Springfield that a low bid of $124,795 had been made for construction of the new dam in Fox river, south of McHenry. The bidder was the C.E. Carson company of Chicago. Mr. Carson is a summer resident at Pistakee Bay. The new dam will replace an obsolete structure built in 1907. The present dam was seriously damaged in the flood which occurred last July. Over 200 awards were made to Scouts and Scouters at a large and interesting Court of Honor held in the local high school for the troops in Boone and McHenry counties. The majority of these awartfe were earned in the first five months of this year. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 20, 1954) Yhe Sacrament of Holy Or ders will be conferred on Everett Hiller of Johnsburg May 27 at St. Joseph's parish, Harvard. The solemn or dination ceremony will be read at 9:30 o'clock at St. Joseph's church, when two native sons of the parish, Rev. Thomas C. Brady and Rev. Philip E. O'Neil, along with Rev. Hiller will be ordained. The first Mass of Rev. Hiller will be on Sunday in St. John the Baptist church, Johnsburg. Arnold J. Rauen, McHenry, state director, U.S. Sayings bonds division, has been assigned to the national savings bonds staff. Mr. Rauen will serve as a national sales representative in the Treasury's bond division. He will work closely with banks and banking associations throughout the country in promoting the sales of series E. and H. savings bonds. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 14, i960) George Mally, ad ministrative director of the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for McHenry county, announced the for mation of "brief encounter groups" for adolescents in volved with drugs and alcohol. The purpose of these encounter groups will be to open the doors of communication between the teenager and his parents. From three to five families will meet with clinic staff in a series of four sessions to discuss ways and means to a better un derstanding of their relationships. Eleven young people above the age of 17 and six juveniles were apprehended by sheriff's deputies during a fracas on Lily Lake road. They found a large assembly in dispute and seized bats, long chunks of chain, knives and pipes. The MCHS golf team con tinued to run its record to 9-1 ^ with some impressive wins over Woodstock, Elgin, Barrington and Antioch. • • • • What our Senators say about foreign policy isn't necessarily right, and doesn't necessarily make sense. * • • • Today's troubles are usually such trifles you can't remember them a day later.
