More and more McHenry citizens are getting involved in saving their materials for recycling Following is a list of some guidelines that may be helpful to old and new recyclers alike: Newspapers-Tie newspapers in both directions in bundles 8 to 10 inches high or place them carefully into strong, brown paper bags. Be sure to remove all plastic bags and wet paper. Cardboard and magazines -- Both are accepted; however, they should be bundled separately from the newspaper since they are sold to different outlets. Glass-Bottles and jars do not have to have lables removed, but the containers should be washed, and all metal and plastic removed. This includes the plastic jackets that are on some soft drink bottles. Bring only clear, green, or brown glass. Cans-All steel cans should be rinsed out, have labels removed, and flattened to conserve space. Please keep all aluminum and all-steel cans separate since they are sold to separate outlets. Aluminum--Only some beverage cans are al l aluminum These are marked "all aluminum" or "recyclable aluminum" on the side, and the sides and bottom of the can will not st ick to a magnet Many beverage cans with steel s ides are now made without a steam at the bottom, giving the ap pearance of an all aluminum can. It is best to look for the aluminum labeling or to check with a magnet The bi metal cans are not recyclable because Qf the two metals in volved (steel sides and bottom and aluminum tops) and must be disposed of through regular t rash disposal channels. A much more environmentally sound practice would be to purchase beverages in returnable containers Oil-Used motor oil should be in plast ic jugs with a secure l id The Il l inois Department of Energy est imates that close to 16 mil l ion gallons of oi l are purchased in this s tate by the do-i t-yourself oi l changers. Most of that oil ends up on the land ei ther when it is put out for . the trash man and disposed of in landfi l l , or when it is im properly disposed of by the oil changer himself . Oil does not wear out . i t just gets dir ty Approximately 65 percent of each gallon can be reclaimed. Anyone having questions alniut preparation of materials , or with a large quanti ty of materia] to be picked up. please call ei ther the McHenry County Defender representat ive at 185- H512 or West Campus high school and leave a message for Robert I .udwigsen Political Corner Don Lyon Seeks GOP Nomination /ol »q ? ow »do nd fi l l ( i i . li id Legal Notice The Board of Review of McHenry County, Illinois, after a hearing conducted on May 7, 1979, relative to township multipliers have adopted the following final multipliers for all farm land property for the tax year of 1978 payable in 1979 to wit: The following multipliers will be applied to land value only on all parcels of farm property that have a farm classification as defined by the Illinois Revenue Statutes 1977 - Chapter 120, Section 501e and classified as 0010 or 0020 in all assessments and tax records of McHenry County. TURN ONS New Postal Size Standards Become Effective July 15 "Use up your small and undersized envelopes and cards before July 15", Postmaster Leroy Smith reminds customers. That is the datqj . when the postal service 's new size standards become ef fective The McHenry postmaster said that after July 15. en velopes and cards measuring less than 3I_> inches high or ."> inches long w i l l be returned to the sender if mailed Postmaster Smith said that because the envelope and greeting card industr ies have had more than three years to prepare for the new standards, few retai lers should st i l l be sel l ing undersized pieces. "Many consumers, however, are l ikely to st i l l have smaller envelopes and cards in their supply of s tat ionery", Smith said The regulat ions also prohibit f l imsy cards. In the future they must be at least seven- thousandths ( .007) of an inch thick An official postal card, for instance, has a thickness of nine thousandths of an inch. Undersized pieces and fl imsy cards are being banned because they can become trapped in other mail and tear and jam mail processing machinery. As a result , they are delivered unnoticed, s tuck to another 's mail , and let ters of others can also be damaged. The standards also affect oversized and odd shaped pieces of mail . Smith said Fot f irst class mail weighing one ounce or less, there will be a surcharge of 7 cents for pieces more than 6 'h inches high or 111 - inches long For more information, the postmaster suggests customers check with a post office window clerk Cash Fact Money is uhat ue spend for luxuries and oue for necessi t ies The McHenry Plaindealer Newspaper Available At The Following Locati •RUCKS •MAYS DRUG 'BELL LIQUORS •McHENRY WALC-REEN •LAKEVIEW •SUNNYSIDE FOOD • • ' U l l ' •wi t ^ 9 1 - i f l - i u (J 'un KJ'q IB" " iEM b' ty 9U i f dsd I j I/. i ' JOHNSBURG FOOD MA*"*** • ADAMS GROCERY • BOLGER S DRUG STORE •LITTLE STORE •BEN FRANKLIN •OSCO DRUGS •FRED & IRENE S TAP • •I f t - .
