Our neighbor, Ford Hanford, was so disgusted with his Cubs in that famous 23-22 game with the Phillies that he turned off the TV after the first inning and walked outside to cool off. The Cubs were losing 21 to 9 when I switched on the game so there was no reason to turn it off if records were to be broken. Skyhawks Defeat Harvard 5-4 In Playoff Opener By Joe Kost The High School Regional Playoffs began last Tuesday' and the Johnsburg Skyhawks- proved themselves by defeating the Harvard Hornets 5-4. Johnsburg is seeded eighth out of 12 teams in the regional and Geno Kingston of DeKalb is seeded first. Even'though the score was close, the game itself was a Skyhawk runaway. Harvard jumped on winning pitcher Jake Breit in the first inning with two base hits and a walk. Breit buried himself by walking the next two batters to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Then, with the bases still loaded, first baseman Mike Gillelte ex­ ploded on a fastball for a three run triple and a 4-0 Harvard lead. Johnsburg held Harvard to only two base runners in the second inning. Turn Things Around The Skyhawks changed things around in the third in­ ning and cut Harvard's lead to only two runs. Jake Breit led off with a walk and Keith Surrat followed with a basehit. A sacrifice bunt by Dave Hiller moved the runners to second and third. Kurt Valentin hit a quick ball to the shortstop; he dropped it and the Skyhawks had a run with men on first and third. Surrat scored on a wild pitch and at the end of the third inning Johnsburg was trailing, 4-2. Neither team scored in the fourth inning but in the fifth, consecutive base hits by Keith Surrat and Dave Hiller allowed Kurt Valentin to unload a deep flyball to left field to score another Skyhawk run. The action then shifted to the bottom of the seventh inning. The Skyhawks trailed by one run and had only three outs to make up for it. Jake Breit started things off with a walk. Then the Skyhawks bats literally exploded. Dave Hiller hit a long double down the left field line that moved Breit to third. With men on second and third, Kurt Valentin unloaded for his third and fourth R.B.I.'s of the game by cracking a double into left-center field that gave Johnsburg a 5-4 victory. Harvard had four runs on 8 scattered hits while Johnsburg claimed 5 runs on 9 hits. Cheri Kofler, (at right) is only a freshman, but she is showing lots of potential on the Skyhawk girls' track team. Kofler regularly finishes first in the long jump and 100 yard and 220 yard dash events. Last week she qualified for State at the Oregon District with a time of 12.33 in the 100 yard dash. Twenty-three schools participated in the meet.Kofler goes to Eastern Illinois University today to participate in the State finals. Johnsburg High Girls Break Conference Track Records Two Johnsburg high school track stars, freshman Cheri Kofler and sophomore Sue Moulis, broke Shark Con­ ference records in Tuesday's annual Shark Conference Track Meet at Hononegah. Kofler broke the record for long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 2 inches. She also placed first in the 220 dash with a time of 27.6 and second in the 100 yard dash at 12.1 seconds. Moulis set a new girl's record in the . .880 yard run with a finishing time of 2:34 seconds. Moulis took second in the mile with a time of 6:01.8. The Johnsburg girl's track team came in fourth in the seven-team conference meet. Taking fifth place were the 880 relay team, Inge Dschida on the 110 low hurdles and shot put, Rocky Rieck for the discus, and Renee Aldenbrook for the high jump. The 880 medley team took a fourth place and the 440 relay team placed third. Smith finished with a time of 10:29.2, just 10 seconds short of setting a new conference record. Smith also finished second in the mile run. He was one second behind the winner. Rick Szumlas placed second in the low hurdles for the Skyhawks. The junior cin- derman has been one of the top hurdlers in the conference all season. Chris Dixon took home three ribbons from the track meet, placing fourth in the high jump, fifth in the 880 relay (with Bill Hovseth, Mike Lyons, and Mike Davis), and third in the mile relay (with Rick Szumlas, Wayne Besserud, and Juha Vester). Vester captured third <place in the 880 yard run, and Besserud took fifth in the same event. The Johnsburg squad took fifth place in the Shark Con­ ference, ahead of Harvard and North Boone.
