•AGE 4 -PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. JUNE 1.1979 Hare Rnd There In Bu Before Buying-investigafe Builder Perfect Safety Record Fat Bonus Before you buy a new home, investigate the builder, suggests the Home Builders Assocation of Greater Chicago (HBAGC), trade association of the area's leading builders. "Most builders are highly reliable and will deliver everything they promise: it's a handful of unethical operators who cause problems in the home building industry, just as they do in other businesses," said HBAGC president, C. Cass Collins. To make sure of the builder you're considering buying from, Collins suggests you check the following sources: 1 - The village hall in the community where you're thinking of buying. Find out if the building inspector has been having any problems with the builder. 2. - Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago, telephone 887-7575. This organization consists of reputable builders, large and small, who are governed by an Ethics committee that settles complaints and polices stan dards. 3. - Home Owners Warranty (HOW) program, telephone 887-7578. This is a program set up by the National Association of Home Builders that now insures over $19 billion worth of housing in the U.S., including 25,000 homes in the Chicago area. HOW provides insurance to back up the builder's own warranty and also to cover the house for an additional period. If the builder is unable or un willing to correct specified defects, HOW takes over. HOW coverage extends over 10 years. 4. - People who have already bought and are living in homes built by the builder you're considering. These owners are probably the most accurate barometer of builder quality. Other possible sources in clude the Better Business Bureau, although at time the BBB may have complaints registered which later turn out Safety In Spring Projects to be unjustified, and your own bank, for a Dun & Bradstreet credit report on the builder. However, some builders do not issue figures to Dun & Brad- street, and so lack of this in formation does not indicate anything about the builder. "Among these sources, the prospective buyer can get an excellent picture of a builder," Collins said. "However, the buyer should know that, just as with anything else that is man- made, a house may have defects in it that can be corrected and other defects that are chargeable to wear- and-tear as the house ages. These are to be expected." Plant Manager These Illinois Bell outside line technicians are all smiles because thty are among eight who had over five years of accident free drfving. Commonwealth Edison has some advice that can insure the satisfaction of a job well done without risk if that do-it- yourself project is the in stallation or work on an an tenna. digging fence post holes, or the planting of trees. Edison urges that a safe distance be maintained from power lines when installing or working on an antenna. Con tract with electric facilities - by a person, antenna or metal stepladder - can result in serious injury. If your home is served by underground electric cables, it is wise to have Edison mark service lines before you start digging to plant that tree or make fence post holes. When it comes to power lines, whether overhead or buried, it always makes sense to practice safety. In addition to the serious personal injury that can result from contact with an electrical power line, a mishap can cause thousands of dollars in damages, too. It could also interrupt the power supply to the immediate neighborhood or across a widespread area, which may include hospitals and other vital locations. Adults, of course, are not the only ones who head outdoors in warmer weather. To children, one of the things that goes hand-in-hand with springtime is kite flying. Two precautions need to be remembered. First, never use any metal on the kite or string, and second, find an open space away from overhead power lines to get that kite up in the air, then watch it soar and dip with the wind currents. A hidden bonus was a sharp drop in their blood pressure readings. The company paid 15-pound- overweight workers $4 a pound if they realized a pre-targeted weight loss over a 13-month period and an additional dollar for each pound lost above the goal. If they lost as much as 15 pounds, they were paid $1 a pound. Of the 173 employees in the program. 100 lost the total of 1,330 pounds. This weight- losing group was comprised of 26 who accomplished goals, 15 who lost at least 15 pounds but did not make their targets, and another contingent of 59 who lost amounts ranging from one to 14 pounds. In the first quarter a year earlier the North Western reported a loss of $10,789,000 or $2.43 a share, again, occasioned Tuesday, May 29, was the picnic and "graduation day" for 40 nursery school students by what were, at the time, record-shattering snows and cold temperatures.
