•AGE « - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JUNE 27,1979 o "EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR That was the week that was. Joe Frett Day, a cocktail party, a lawn party, Father Baumhofer's retirement party, lunch with the old time Saturday Morning Group" -- just name it -- it happened last week. Now when it seems time to relax, our dear editor has a sign posted that reminds columnists of an early deadline next week because of the holiday. What our Brenda means is, "Get going. You have three columns to write this week." It's easy for her to talk. She's (smart. Yep. She gets material 'together in advance. Some of us *poor dubs have to depend on ;The Lord Up Above to send jdown some inspiration. *jT Joe Frett tftiitt be in control &of the weather valves up there Jin heaven. Lloyd Freund ^reminded the crowd at the •"dinner that 01* Joe never lets us klown. » * There were 142 golfers or swingers who teed off at Chapel Hill Friday on the annual Memorial Day for Joe Frett. Then the crowd gathered at the Johnsburg Community Club dining hall for one of those now famous home-cooked dinners. There were prizes for everything but the biggest eater and that probaly would have ended up in a 6-way tie the way a group at one table hollered for more food. It was good to see George Frett at the party. Says a recent checkup found him in top shape. Still wonder why they can't find a way to detect weapons and bombs the hijackers carry onto planes. That old buzzer sure blasts when I go through the line One time it was the metal band on my cane. It must have been the filling in my teeth the next time. Had to empty all my pockets. When I go through they think they have a live one. The Chicago Bears will soon be finding their way to their training camp in Lake Forest and football will overlap the baseball season. Holdout Mike Phipps is reported to have said maybe the Bears should look for a quarterback. That's what fans have be^p saying for years^ What else is flew? Forgetting thfe gasoline crunch for the moment, Alvina and I toured main roads and side roads between McHenry and Crystal Lake. A few years back, I disputed her prediction that everything would be built up between the two cities in a short time. Looking at all the sub divisions and new construction made me swallow my words. Beautiful farms are no more. Herds of cows are now as scarce as horses. For one who rode a pony over most of that area in bygone days, it is a sad sight to see the countryside turned so citified. It is called progress. Old Timers pronounced Nunda with a long "a". Nowadays the soft "a" is used by many. A large crowd gathered to honor Father Baumhofer at his retirment party, realizing that ?HE SHADOW KNOWS-Who's ahead at this point? Andy Oakley (left) and John Mclnerney are side ty side near the five mile mark of the seven mile marathon. John's shadow appears to have the lead, And he and his shadow crossed the finish line at a record of 36:22 to capture the 18-24 age win as well >s the overall. Andy was close behind with a second place time of 36:58. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD SPEEDING TRAFFlC^crosses the Pearl Street bridge near the start of the McHenry Marathon that drew over 100 entrants as runners Ibid for the lead. From McHenry to Johnsbyx^group spread out and near the 5 mile mark it became a battle between John Mclnerney aid Andy Oakley of McHenry. John won setting • new record with a time of 36:22. Full results appear In this Issae and • photo page will appear in Friday's issue. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD *ing ran he has earned a rest, but trj to cover their feelings of a grteat loss to his parish and the entii community. His friends into high figures among denominations. To those who listened to Father Baumhofer at the party, it was evident that the old spark is still there. He was presented with a key to the city to keep with his key . to heaven. Old Padres never die. They just pray away. • LAKE REGION • i YMCA NEWS : "Y" DAY CAMPERS RECEIVE TENNIS AND SWIMMING INSTRUCTION The Lake Region YMCA Day Camp is open for registration and some of the periods are close to being filled.
