It is a state licensed humane society which has been servicing McHenry county for eight years. It is dedicated to the protection and well-being of all animals although services for this area deal mostly with dogs and cats. It has one goal...to build a clinic-shelter facility, a goal that seems so very distant due to limited finances. It offers foster homes in which stray and injured animals are placed temporarily until adoption., These foster homes are the mftst important part of the programs, for without them, Helping Paws could offer very little service to the community. Helping Paws wants to mention that the Ristos of Woodstock the O'Neals, Johnsons, Canes, D. Brockrogge, and H. Taylor of Crystal Lake all are our cat folks. One lone dog lover stands as a foster home, the Grandts of Woodstock. Without these people, many good pets would have been lost. As you can see, more foster homes are desperately needed. Please call Pattie Cane, foster home chairman, for further information at 459-6523. While mentioning some special people, no amount of appreciation could ever ex press the feelings at saying goodby to our long time writer of this column, Estelle Atwell. She has served HP with dignity and devotion. She brought to this column professionalism and expertise. She will long be remembered. Other programs HP sponsors are lost and found publicity of pets, financial assistance to those proven to be in need, school classroom presen tations, cruelty investigations and follow up of all HP and Animal Control adoptions, among other things. Right now HP is looking for new blood, not only as volun teers to help out in our many program areas, but also new members for the board of directors. Many of you express gratitude for the job HP is doing, but it needs new - thoughts, new motivated folks who have time to give. Criteria for board membership is placing the welfare of the animals before your own self- esteem; time to come to a meeting the third Wednesday of every month in the evening; a desire to contribute some new ideas to help HP achieve more. Please call President Gary Boettcher, 312 639-2881, for more information. A person may also receive information of all kinds on Friday, July 27, at the HP booth at Founders Day in Algonquin. Remember, too, that, is the day for the dog and cat shows for pets and their mistresses or / masters, ages 4-16. Registration is one half hour before show time. "• • • • A happy spirit is the greatest possession that comes to man, regardless of his wealth or lack of it. Better work habits may one day save your life. With the variety of kitchen equipment and appliances available today, it's most im portant to read use and care instructions carefully.. For example, never use heat- resistant glass ovenware on top of the range or under the broiler. ' When using a microwave oven, check the manual to see what cooking accessories and materials can and cannot be used. Don't overload electrical wiring by plugging too many appliances into one circuit. Replace or repair frayed or broken cords. Wipe up grease and other spilled liquids and substances promptly. If the floor slopes or has missing or loose tiles, it poses a hazard, especially for the elderly who may or may not be able to see or sidestep these conditions. Above all, don't be careless; instead be organized. Following these and other Safety rules can help to make your home and kitchen a safer place in which to live and work. • Warm weather and holidays make people more mobile. If friends are about to pop in on short notice, gather everything that's out of place and dump it in to an empty basket you keep in the cleaning closet. Wipe ashtrays, stack newspapers, plump pillows. Oive the bathroom and kitchen a once over. Wipe co&ntertops clean. Close the doors of rooms you don't want on display.
