Dixon Secretary of State In spite of safety precautions and defensive driving techniques, thousands of drivers are involved in traffic accidents each year.' It is im portant for everyone to be aware of the proper procedure to follow when filing an ac cident report. Whenever an accident results in death or bodily injury, or damage to the property of any one person in excess of $250, there are three important steps which must be taken by the driver of the vehicle involved. 1. If no police officer is present, notify the nearest police station as quickly as possible. If the accident occurs outside of a municipality, notice must be given to the nearest office of the county sheriff or Illinois state police. Whenever the driver is unable to give immediate notice of an accident and there are passengers in the vehicle, one of them who is capable of doing so must comply with the requirement. 2. A written report must be made to the Illinois Depart ment of Transportation within ten days after the accident. Report forms can usually be obtained from a police officer or automobile insurance agencies. Accident reports are kept confidential. 3. Many cities also required accident reports. If you are involved in an accident within the limits of any municipality, be sure to ask if an accident report is required. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon. Secretary of State. Springfield. 62756.> ).
