Okay Legislation For rv.A.NEWSl Mental Health Grants Governor James R. Thomp son has approved legislation to provide $3.7 million to the Department of Mental Health for grants to community mental health organizations in the state to continue providing local, rather than in stitutionalized, care {or the mentally ill and mentally handicapped. The funds are part of $471.7 million approved by Thompson in the fiscal year 1980 budget for the Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. Generally, the grant funds, which were not included in the governor's budget in March, will be used for workshops, treatment, rehabilitation, transportation, family support and other assistance for the mentally ill, mentally retarded, cerebral palsied, epileptic and autistic. Inclusion of the added funds was possible, Thompson said, through reductions in ap propriations for operations of state-run facilities. Upon VA Faith Presbyterian To Hold Bible School IN HISTORICAL DIG - Vicki Kuglin, a student at McHenry high school, was one of 15 Iowa teachers and high school seniors who took part in an archaeological dig near Fayette this summer. The dig, which took place on ^n ancient Indian camp site near the Volga river project, was part of a course in the University of Iowa summer program for teachers and high school students. Called "Digging Iowa Prehistory," the three-week course was designed to give first-hand experience in archaeological techniques and concepts. Several thcusand years ago, the site was popular with Indians. According to Lise Tatum, U of I graduate student and field director for the dig, abundant wildlife and over 150 species of edible plants made the area very popular with Indians for summer hunting camps.
