Summer time was, and still partially is, a time of nice weather, sunshine and warm breezes, and most of us not having too many cares as we walk or drive to and from our daily chores. We have a ten dency to become lazy, and slightly earless in our duties, and tend to think that the "other guy" will look out for me to get me out of any close scrapes. However, now is the time for all of us to "wake up and smell the coffee" and start paying a little more attention to what we are doing and to watch out for the kids. Aug. 1,8,15,1979) their bikes, walking down the sidewalks (I hope, if you could call that unhappy shuffle going to school every morning a walk) and crossing the streets at the intersections; and parents, I think that this is a good time to ask you to remind your children to use the sidewalks, and to cross at the intersections, being aware of any vehicles on the roadway. Of course, there are going to be some children who will not do as they are supposed to, and will choose to walk in the street, cross the street in the middle of the block, and generally just be careless. These few children are the ones that we as the motoring public must watch out for the most. ^ It should be common knowledge that a pedestrian has the right of way "over any vehicle whenever the pedestrian is using the proper crosswalks, and that all vehicles must yield to them. If you can still remember back to the days when you were going to school, you will remember that you were not in what one1 would call a rush to get there, so let's have a little patience with some of the children's slowness and not lay on the horn to move them along. (You will also remember that I said before that unnecessary use of the horn is illegal). Actually, we have two "rush hours" in the morning and two more in the afternoon for the children going to and from school, since the high schools ENTE BR 750 ML FIFTH Louis Martini 1975 CABERNET SAUYIONON IMPORTED PINCH 12 YR. Granted, when you get into the high school years you should know better than to cross in- properly, and to use the sidewalks, but that is not always the case. Most of the smaller children remember the lessons better, and tend to obey the laws more readily than the older children. Still, drivers, keep a sharp eye out for any children that you see. The young ones get careless too, in their anxlousness to get to school. (Yes, Emily, there are still some who like to go to school). Lets make this school year a safe one, with neither any accidents, or even close calls. All of us in the McHenry Police Officers association •would like to give all of you who participated in our "Knock-A- Cop" booth during the Fiesta Days our heartfelt appreciation for your support. According to our president, John Langdon, the booth was a huge success, and will help us greatly with our Junior bowling league in the purchase of shirts and awards for the kids who sign up for the league. There are still a few spots open for any child who attends any McHenry school, grades six through eight, to sign up, and we en courage all to sign up as soon as possible. We have a starting date of Sept. 8, so hurry in and sing up. Again, we appreciate all your help, and rest assured that next year, "Knock-A-Cop" will return, so get your pitching arm in shape! We'll be waiting, and ready. I, personally, am very proud of everyone who came to any and all of the Fiesta Days events, and I think that you should all give yourselves a round of applause. This year's event was probably the safest in the history of the celebration, and had the least amount of problems in a long time.
