Dog owners can avoid the danger from the start, however, with a little extra consideration for their pets. Unlike people, who perspire through their entire bodies, dogs only lose heat through their noses and mouths, so they have less tolerance for warm weather. Experts suggest keeping a dog cool and comfortable by providing plenty of fresh water and a shady place to rest. Some dogs tolerate heat better with close-trimmed hair. But don't groom away too much fur. It's a dog's natural protection from the sun. Also, keep in mind that some types of dogs have less heat tolerance than others. Puppies, and "senior citizens" are particularly susceptible to hot weather, and dogs with allergies or asthma need special attention on sultry days. Be especially watchful if it's a Bulldog, Boxer or Pekingese, examples of breeds whose breathing often is hampered by heat and close, confined spaces. Overexertion is a common cause of heat stroke. Jogging or bicycling with a dog can be fun and healthy for boJIfN-- provided it isn't overdone^ Never exercise a dog in the heat of the day, or immediately after a meal. Small, heavy dogs can't ruti as far as talj, lean ones. No dog shoifld be pressed to run farther than it wants to. Rfemember, most dogs love exercise and only stop when they are exhausted. Every summer, despite' warnings, many dogs die after being locked in automobiles. If one is planning a drive and has to park, it's wise to park Fido at home. If a dog is taken along on a car trip, play it safe. While driving, keep his head inside the car. Summer pollens and dirt can cuase inflammation when blown into the eye. Be sure to park in a shady spot - one that will stay shady as the sun moves. On a warm day, the temperature in . a closed car soars to dangerous levels in minutes, even when it's cloudy. Leave the windows open as much as, possible, on both sides of the car, for cross- ventilation. Check on the dog every 15 to 20 minutes to be sure he's all right, and give him a breath of fresh air out side' the car. Finally, keep in mind that just as a person's temper may grow short when he is hot and uncomfortable, a pet may get "hot under the collar". Keep children away from him so he can rest quietly. Like a person, he just needs time to cool off. Have fun in the sun by guarding against burn and blister. "Burning time" is be tween 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Prices effective while quantities last.
