HEBRON, IL. 8156484012 ,/jm Loving And Living Daughter: "Oh, mother, I took Henry into the loving room last night and. .." Mother: "That's living, young lady." Daughter: "You're telling me!" BeNotAfraM Unless a person confronts and challenges his fears, he runs the risk of remaining mediocre all his life. Fear is the enemy of love. '"We are afraid of the person in misery because he constitutes a danger to us. His poverty and his needs challenge our riches. So we raise the barrio's to keep him from our sight." (Jean Vanier) Fear erodes our confidence and eventually overpowers our instinct to love. Charity is so often denied not because of a lack of awareness, but because of fear which leads to in- sensitivity. Fear affects nearly every human decision. It is always oriented to the future. Some danger is imagined and it scares us off. All the capital sins are aided and abetted by feelings of fear. The fear of losing one's superiority in rank, talent, beauty, or wealth is the essence of pride. It develops into a kind of abhorrence of everything beneath oneself, but it is rooted in the fear of falling behind. The fear of being alone is a familiar problem. Being without intimate consolation, without love, in some people develops into an abnormal desire for the gratification of the sexual appetite. The fear of not getting enough to satisfy other ap petites often leads to an ob session with eating and drinking. Gluttony, which can end in alcoholism and drug addiction, blinds one to the needs of others. Envy is sadness at the sight of another's good fortune and it is usually accompanied by some degree of hatred. This sadness can grow into the fear of losing control .of one's destiny. Anger and violence are often its fruits. Jealousy is the result of fear. It is an unpleasant suspicion or. resentment arising from fear or mistrust of another. The jealous person, with or without justification, is afraid of losing someone or something. When poverty is despised, the fear of ever being poor can drive a person to a greed that knows no limits. Murder is committed rather than facing up to one's avaricious fears. Fear is behind every human vice. When we fail to grow spiritually, it is usually because we have allowed ourselves to be intimidated by some real or imagined threat. 'I There is no simple recipe F6T banishing fear. One thing, however, is certain. To over come our fears we have to confront them directly; challenge them, and rebuke them in the name of Jesus Christ. The Lord promised His support, "Be not afraid, I am with you." And He gave us His example, "Father, if it is p&ssible let this cup pass from My lips, yet not My will but Thine be done." Perhaps surprisingly, a recently released study in dicates that 90 percent of Americans in nursing homes are satisfied with their en vironment. The survey, conducted by the Census Bureau, measur ed the reaction of residents and their families to such factors as lodging, food, social relationships and ac tivities to determine the quality of care provided. Next-of-kin were also ask ed to evaluate the level of care provided to their rela tives. A total of 91.5 per cent believed that the care met the resident's needs and only 1.6 per cent reported that there was a lack of personal attention to the nursing home resident. Ap proximately 5.5 per cent contended there was in adequate treatment, 0.2 per cent, inadequate facilities, and 5 per cent pointed out other reasons for dissatisfac tion. The Survey is available from the Government Print ing Office for |6.00 and the Superintendent of Docu ment number is C 5.186:23/69. Power Producer The world's largest power sta tion is Russia's hydro-electric atation at Krasnoyarsk on the Yenisey River, U.S.S.R., with a potential power output of more than 6.1 million kilowatts.
