I & HELPINQ PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 •(815)4592641 By Mary Nelson When writing a human or 4 animal interest story, every now and then one comes upon something unusual. Last week I received a call from a lady who, in desperation, turned to us as her last hope. It seems that she was having a garage- yard sale and her little black toy poddle was chained in the back yard. While she was busy with the throng attending her sale, someone unhooked the dog and away they want. This is not an uncommon story to hear during a working day at HP. However, what is unusual is the reaction of the three-year old daughter who had been raised with the dog. This happened Friday, Aug. 31. Two days after the theft, the little girl began pretending she was "Cocoa" and, in fact, went so far as to put her candy in the dogs dish and not only drank water from it but ate the candy from the bowl as if she were the dog. She is grieving in her little girl way and so are her parents. This is a trauma that causes complications later on. Ironically this same thing happened to the little girl's mother when she herself was 14. She never forgot it and now it happened again. If anyone has any information about this incident please contact the Near family at 312-639-0196. A reward is offered for the return of the pet with no questions asked. To date, we have received $750 in contributions since orn ery for help began. It's hard to express enough appreciation for your concern and help, but things do not look promising. The next board meeting will be Sept. 19 at 7:30 at HP's store office, 465 Virginia street, Route 14, three doors south east of Dole avenue in Crystal Lake. Everyone is welcome and in fact most needed. Your suggestions and time are desperately wanted. If you can give that time, please come. Please call Sue Royal, organizer of the Sept. 15, Cary Tag day. All she needs is an hour or so of your time. You do no selling, just stand in a specific area, in front of a store and hold a HP collection tin. Remember we collected $800 that way two months ago in Crystal Lake. It can be done again...the more people the better off we will be. Call Sue at 312-639-5142, One of our board members came across 2 kittens about two months old who had obviously been dumped by one of those "well-meaning" people. Of course I do not believe for a minute that the alternative they chose for their cats was a good one. You see, in their zeal to do half of the right thing, they put a flea collar and a regular collar with a bell on the kittens. The idea is to protect them from fleas and to warn unsuspecting birds. If Carol Ann Kaiser had not found these cats and brought them to a neighboring farm, they would have had no way to hunt and find food, for the bell would have warned all prey. If they did manage to survive and grow, the collar placed so tightly around their necks would have remained stationary as they grew and grew and eventaully the collar would have become imbedded in their necks or they would have strangled to death.. Think about it. Is your own pup's or kitten's collar loose enough to allow for growth? We think if you read this column, you must bbvibtisly care. Look around at others and give them a helping suggestion if needed.
