Three days later they re ceived a telegram "Am re turning boy. Please send land slide instead." Because farmers have proven excellent credit risks and the agricultural com munity has a record of finan cial integrity, the Federal Land Bank association (FLBA) of DeKalb-Woodstock has been able to keep interest rates lower than the general money market. John Webb, president of the farmer-owned cooperative, told a record crowd of 600 people at the association's seventh an nual meeting last week that the rate has increased the past year from 8.5 percent to 9.5 on loans. FLBA provides a long- term financing for the agricultural community. Webb said the amount of loans continues to increase and that most of the loans are to buy land to add to existing farms. The sizable increase in the price of farmland accounts in large part for the increase in loan activity. For the 1977 calendar year new loans totaled $24.5 million. Last year the total was $28 million, and for the 1979 calendar • year, Webb an ticipates new loans to total $33 million. He cited figures to show the increase in the price of land bought for farming purposes, using per acre prices the FLBA has compiled for DeKalb county farmland. In 1973, land sold for an average of $1,100 an acre. In 1978, the price had increased to an average of $3,100 an acre. "Today, I believe the average price is v . ft ' A V £ $3,300 an acre." Webb attributed money costs lower than prime rate (it recently reached 12'/4 percent) for the farmer-owned cooperative because the agricultural community is financially strong with a good record of loan repayment. Kirchhoff reviewed the growth in total mortgages outstanding. At the end of December, 1977, the total was almost $94 million. Last year, the total grew to $115 million. By July. 31,1979, the total stood at $133 million. The FLBA of DeKalb- Woodstock serves farmers in McHenry, Lake, Boone, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage and the northern part of Cook counties with long-term financing. Washington, D.C. 20410 SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The Federal Insurance Administrator gives notice of the proposed determinations of base (100-year) flood elevations for selected locations in the nation, in accordance with section 110 of the Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973 (Pub. L. 93-234), 87 Stat. 980, which added section 1363 to the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 (Title XIII of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 (Pub. L. 90-448), 42 U.S.C. 4001-4128, and 44 CFR Part 67.4 (a). These elevations, together with the flood plain management measures required by section 60.3 of the program regulations, are the minimum that are required. They should not be construed to mean the community must change any existing ordinances that are more stringent in their flood plain management requirements. The community may at any time enact stricter requirements on its own, or pursuant to policies established by other Federal, State or Regional entities. These proposed elevations will also be used to calculate the appropriate flood insurance premium rates for new buildings and their contents and for the second layer of insurance on existing buildings and their contents. More than 160 tons of glass and cans have also been recycled, in addition to ap proximately 2 tons of aluminum and 350 gallons of used motor oil. All of these materials have been kept out of the solid waste stream and have entered again into the flow of natural resources available to the state. An interesting fact to note is that for every ton of newspapers recylced, seven teen pulp trees are saved for later use. In addition to this fact community groups have an opportunity to earn funds with. which to carry ^on their projects, and precious landfill space is being saved. This month's recycling drive will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, at the southeast corner of the McHenry Market Place shopping lot, and Boy Scouts from Troop 162 will be on hand to work along with the McHenry County Defenders to unload newspaper and other prepared materials as they arrive. There are 17 regularly held recycling drives held throughout McHenry county with an estimated participation of 9,400 individuals. The following guidelines may be of help to any citizens in terested in becoming a part of McHenry's recycling project. Newspapers ~ should be tied in both directions in bundles 8 to 10 inches high or placed neatly and securely into strong, brown paper bags. All plastic bags should be removed. Wet paper is not acceptable, since newspaper is processed im mediately upon unloading and must be dry. Recycled baling twine is available for those who would like to take some home with them. Magazines and corrugated cardboard - should be bundled separately from the newspapers since they are sold to different outlets. Glass bottles and jars - should be clean and have all metal and plastic removed. Paper labels do not need to be removed. Do not pre-crush glass. All-steel cans - should be rinsed out, have labels removed, bottoms cut out and cans flattened to conserve space. Aluminum - should be separated from the all-steel cans since they are processed through different plants. All- aluminum beverage cans usually have "all-aluminum" or -'recyclable aluminum" printed on them. If in doubt, use a magnet, for a magnet will not stick to the side of an all- aluminum can. Bi-metal cans, which are not acceptable, will have steel sides with aluminum tops. Most pop cans are of this nature. Used motor oil should be in a plastic jug with a secure lid. For further information on the drive held this Saturday or on any of the other drives held in McHenry county that might be more conveniently located, call the McHenry County Defenders representative at 385-8512. BIBU BRIEFS ) So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes from the preaching of Christ. Romans 10:17 Attending church once a week is much more a formality than the demonstration of faith some Christians consider it to be. Faith compels us to listen, to heed, and to abide by the ways of God and the teachings of Christ. We are not born with faith, so we can lose it by being too self- serving, too self-attentive, too in different to the needs of others. ** • * I We keep the faith when we continue to seek, hear and heed the word of God.
