Reserve 20 Fall Nursing Seats In Shared Program PAGE S - PLAINDE ALER - FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 2S. !•» As part of the shared student program between McHenry County college and Elgin Community college, 20 seats in the fall 1980 nursing das* have been reserved for residents of the MCC district. Applications for admission may be filed in the Elgin Community college's office of admissions beginning Oct. 1. According to James Galbraith, director of Ad­ missions at ECC, applications will be considered for ac­ ceptance in the order in which they are filed. A total of 20 students will be selected for the fall 1980 class from the McHenry County college district. Because of the limited enrollment, Galbraith en­ courages interested applicants to have their applications filed early. A limited number of students who qualify after the enrollment total of 20 is reached will have their names placed on a waiting list which will give them priority for next year's entering class as long as they remain iri good academic standing. In order to have an ap­ plication considered, some requirements must be met. All students interested in enrolling should contact the Elgin Community college Office of Admissions at (312) 697-1000, extension 293 for the appropriate application materials. In addition, they should make immediate arrangements to have all high school and college transcripts forwarded to the office of ad­ missions and records. This past Sunday the high school's Outdoor club helped the McHenry Area Jaycees sponsor the annual 10-mile canoe race on The Fox river. Ten students and their sponsor, Mr. Wirtz, arrived at 8 a.m. to help unload canoes and register contestants. Although the race drew some top athletes, novice canoers from the Outdoor club joined in on the fun. Of a dozen canoes entered in the high school class race, Toni Weyland finished third. The Outdoor club draws its members from both campuses and the activities offered are deteremined by student in­ terest. Upcoming fall activities include horseback riding, rollerskating, a camp-out in October, and their first canoe trip down the Nippersink creek this weekend. The club is looking forward to its first annual Fishing Derby to be held on Grass lake Sept. 29. All McHenry high school students are invited to participate. During the winter months the club plans to sponsor activities in ice fishing, ice skating, and tobogganing. Also offered will be one of the clubs' most pop- . ylqr activities, cross-country skiing. Students will enjoy this fast growing sport at local areas like Moraine Hills and Chain-of-Lakes parks. In the spring the club is planning to offer canoeing, horseback riding, and bicycling. A new activity, nature hikes, will be offered all year long. Students will par­ ticipate in hikes led by a naturalist at one of the local county or state forests. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get exercise while learning about the nature around them. The Outdoor club certainly offers students a variety of ways to enjoy the great out­ doors. Good health and how. to keep it is in the forefront of attention these days. Because of increased interest in health both as a personal avocation and as a profession, McHenry County college is offering six adult education courses and seminars this fall which deal with health topics. If the interest is in a healthy mind, the college has a class, "Current Approaches in Psychotherapy" which in­ cludes a survey of theories and methods used in contemporary mental health treatment. The class covers psychosynthesis, bioenergetics, biofeedback, Gestalt and transactional analysis. A different approach to health is taken in the Holistic Health seminar that the college is offering Oct. 11. The seminar is in the whole-person approach to people as spiritual, mental and physical entities. In this class you'll learn how emotional reactions to the stress of modern life can cause p h y s i c a l d i s t r e s s . Psychosomatic disorders and adaptive methods for attaining health and maintaining it are also included. The special health needs of expectant mothers are covered in two new classes at MCC this fall as well. For the newly - pregnant woman there's an "Early Pregnancy Class" which explains how to safeguard the unborn child during the first three months of pregnancy. Topics to be covered include nutrition, exercises, growth of the fetus, X-rays, medications, smoking, alcohol, infections, sexual activity and the emotions of pregnancy. There are also several "Prepared Childbirth" classes based on the Lamaze techniques of preparing for labor and delivery.
