They present a big challenge to Shari to hold on to her winning streak in the coming seasons. Good luck. Shari! In the middle of August, although hampered by one of the few rains that fell on the ladies' events, the gals outdid themselves when they hosted the Fifth Annual McHenry Women's Invitational. The Pink and Green was a truly beautiful affair and will be repeated next year. Carrying the banner away from home the Traveling Team did their club proud. Not only did they win their division, they also won the Division Play-Off held at Village Links in Lamont Back in the early part of August a group of the local gals participated in the 18th Annual N.I.W.G.A. two-day tournament wherein a number of the McHenry women once again shone, the brightest light being Sue Martin who captured Low Net over the entire field. Spreading the good name of McHenry further, in the second , week of September a group of the women traveled to Springfield for a three-day tournament for Senior Women and returned home with more goodies. This time it was Nancy Wilkins' turn to shine, and she did. by capturing Low Net over the entire field. A lot of adrenalin flowes through ihe veins of those who participate in the game of golf, with the losers as well as the winners, and the Good Lord willing and the Creek Don't Rise it will still be flowing when next year 's season rolls around "Til then. There will be another get together in November so the date will probably reach us before too long. -- """'w The Cubs really know how to get publicity. A newspaper story that quotes or misquotes Manager Herman Frank stirs things up to the point where Hefty Herman resigns a week before the season ends. To become completely confused, one has to read both Chicago dailies One carries not-so-nice stories about Herman while the other one quotes players with different opinions. Herman lasted three years. Thai's good going in the managerial department When a team loses, the manager has to take the blame. He isn't the one who strikes out with the bases loaded, but he is still the fall guy. One group thinks 01' Herman isn't a mastermind. Second guessing is a privilege sports fans can enjoy It looked like the Cubs had a strong bench this year. Maybe the bench broke down. Maybe it was the front liners. As A1 Smith used to say, "Let's look at the records". I would if I had them. From my point of view (and that's through the eyes of an admiring Sox fan), the Cubs will have to find another pit cher. When Rick Reuschel was out with injuries, they lost their stopper. Players are quoted as saying they need more ball players. Who doesn't? - Especially since expansion hit the ball game like inflation hit the country. What's your guess? Ill say Randy Hundley will be the next Cub manager. The Sox are winning a lot of ball games in September, too little too late. They aren't getting the headlines. Maybe Bill Veeck should pull another big stunt. The Sox couldn't go places with Rock and Roll. They should waltz in next year with softer music. After a long illness, Mike Budler has been called to a place above. Mike was what I call a good guy. He made a lot of friends when he ran the old Palace bowling alleys on Green Street. The ranks are thinning. I miss old friends. Met former McHenrite Gerry Rogers at Arnold Rauen's Bier- Stube Sunday night in the Bismarck Hotel in Chicago. An early Oktoberfest. Big feast and a German band. Not one Irish tune. Gerry looks great with a straight front he didn't have as a rather hefty McHenry High student. --And, he's a grandfather! TOM LUDWIG Tom Lodwig, former McHenry high athlete, is listed on the 1979 College Conference at Illinois and Wisconsin All-Star Baseball Sqnad. Tom's record for the season at Elmhurst CoUege was three wins and no losses with a 1.13 earned run average.
