Lake Region Sports Car Club (LRSCC) road rallye. as many are a test of how strong a marriage is especially when a husband-wife team are in the same car. But, the Turns Of The Pioneer rallye did consist of 33 executions during the 53-mile trek over the main and back roads of McHenry county. The guest navigators, residents of the community living facility of the Pioneer center for the exceptional in Woodstock, came through like professionals as they instructed the" Lake Region drivers on what to do and where to turn. Many of the club's past rallyes have found the entrants receving over 1,000 penalty points as they missed turns, milage calculations, checkpoints etc. This even found the two last place entrants with just a 200 point disavantage, and the winner, a Honda Civic driven by club member, Jeannie Allen, and her navigator, Donna Pitt, was only 15.2 points from a perfect score. Months of planning went Into the event as Chairman Dick Rotter and beard members considered various groups as a beneficiary. Gary Went, of the Pioneer center presented a slide presentation of the McHenry County Pioneer center during a LRSCC meeting. Members of the club also toured the Pioneer center facilities located in the old convent next to Marian Central high school. The event became a reality Sunday, Sept. 30, as eight residents of the Pioneer center and LRSCC members held a one-hour rallye instruction class. Lake Region member Scott Johnson explained various rallye codes and each navigator received a map of McHenry county. f ; ' Prior to the start, all vehicles had to pass the LRSCC tech and safety examination. All cars also had to be equlped with a mounted fire extinguisher,va first aid kit' and three flares. Although a few of the guests appeared uncertain in their ability to handle their task while listening to the instructions, once in the passenger seat, they were quickly at ease and the cars were dff at one-minute intervals. No time was wasted as the navigators shouted the executions to their drivers: "Left at T-- Right at stop-- Change average speed to 49.5-- Slow up here-catch up later. "Right on Alden". And so it went 'til the first checkpoint, located on State Line road near Hebron. Everyone made it, and they were off and running for the final checkpoint, which was located at the entrance of Petersen park on McCullom Lake road in McHenry. The drivers and navigators could finally relax now as they sipped a cook drink and filled in their rallye sheets, while club members kept three grills smoking with brats and hot dogs to All stomachs of the hungry entrants. Following the cookout* Rallymaster Rotter announced the official finish and awarded red and black t-shlrts to all the navigators. The shirts were lettered with "I Survived a L.R.S.C.C. Rallye." In the center of the shirts was a logo of a car bearing a helmeted driver and a frightened navigator. The Pioneer center navigators were anything but frightened as they performed an exceptional task.
