Eventually, they found the g|. most-right house in Roslyn, Long Island, with the potential for being made perfect. When their preliminary re- - modeling plans weie complete, the Kess's consulted architect Philip Smerling, who handled the design and decor. "Make the house look and feel mote spacious," Kess told him. "The floor plan is okay, but we feel closed in." To create larger but fewer rooms, Smerling moved bed room walls outward. The en trance to the bedroom area was moved up the hall to add a bath to die master bedroom suite. Smerling also removed the wall between the kitchen and the living room, installed a beam in its place for support, and created a free-standing fire place open to the living room and dining room. He enlarged the countertop in the kitchen to act as an eating counter. The architect achieved dra matic results by removing a series of windows along the liv ing room wall and a small glid ing door linking the kitchen with a deck at the rear of the house. In their place, Smerling spe cified two 12 foot-wide, Ander sen wood gliding doors, flanked at each end by matching side lights. This opened the entire 36 foot wall from floor to cetying to a view of the woods at the rear of the property. The gliding door nearest the kitchen opens onto the existing deck. With the kitchen wall re moved., the living room --formerly closed in by the FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12.i»7» the comfort or wasting fuel for heating or air conditioning." "Now we have the kind of house we want," adds Kess. "When the extension to the deck is completed, it will dou- . ble the feeling of spaciousness in the living room. "The kitchen, with access through the large gliding door to the existing deck, already seems twice as large." Entertaining takes on a new dimension for the Kess's, too. Instead of grouping in the closed-in living room and hav ing to walk through the kitchen to get out on the deck, guests can circulate freely in the newly opened kitchen/living room area and step out onto the deck without leaving the party. "We've only been in the house for a year," said Mrs, Kess. "I never dreamed that so much could be done in such a short time." BEFORE REMODELING, living room of this home felt "dowd In" by multiple light windows of fixed glass topped by operating casements for ventilation. View of woods was restricted by broad window framing. • AFTER, THE ENTIRE WALL in the living room/ldtchen area is open to deck and better view of the woods with use o£two 12- foot wide Andersen wood gliding doors flanked by matching side lights. The owners describe remodeling as "making the house feel more spacious." small windows --merged with the open kitchen to add about one third to its apparent length. Its width is visually expanded outward by the wall of gliding doors. Safety insulating glass, stan dard in the Andersen gliding doors, actually reduces heat loss in the wide expanse of glass to less than what it was prior to re modeling. "Because of the attractive ness of the woods in the back of the house," says Kess, "we wanted to create a feeling of be ing part of it.
