•P1.AINDEALER FRIDAY. OCTOBER 12.IKS it EARL WALSH So I Hear _SP0RTS EDITOR All is too quiet on the Western Front. Editor "Brenda" is vacationing. Met Clyde Blackwell striding down the street at a rapid pace and decided he must have taken another dip in "the Fountain of Youth. The World Series is about to open. If I don't reach John Busscher by phone, let it be known that the American League will emerge victorious and our usual bet is on. Having expressed my ad miration of the Pittsburgh Pirates, it seems only right to say the series will go six games and maybe seven. Two mighty good teams are representing their leagues in this series and, as Joe Dehn remarked, two top rate managers will be pulling out all the stops. One Edward Blake brings me the disheartening news that "Hezzie" Miller has switched his long standing allegiance from the White Sox to the Cubs. Say it isn't so! Russian ballet dancers have defected to the United States. People have been known to switch political parties. Some decide one church suits their fancy better than another. But, for a staunch White Sox fan to fall from the ranks -- that's too much. WHOOPS! I went out for a few minutes and missed John Busscher's phone call. The bet is still on -- but Big John is worried this time. I wish all the strikes in this country of ours could take place on the baseball diamond and on the bowling alleys. fT Just heard a weather report and wonder if the time has come to get out the snow tires. One fellow told me he put on his long drawers and isn't going to take them off until next spring. ; McHenry High's new football coach, who has given us mighty interesting games if not long on victories, will take his team to ^Jacobs High Saturday af ternoon. Hope Dick Rabbitt's crystal ball isn't cloudy on this one. IT HAS BEEN SAID-- A grandmother is a baby sitter who watches the kids instead of the television. Old sparks are easily kindled. (Lovers beware). Time heals all wounds. The scars remain. Nobody knows how to manage a wife as well as a bachelor does. Good manners are of more importance than laws. -Edmund Burke A politician who says he welcomes criticism ought to be happy most of the time. People who live in glass houses might as well answer the doorbell. I am living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart. -Saki. If your neighbor's house is on Are, take care of your own. If a person is decent enough to apologize to you for a wrongdoing, you should be gracious enough to accept. BEST TOAST HEARD - v , . Happy Days -- - And a short winter. ~ ~ FOOTBALL * * * By Pete Fritchie WASHINGTON, D. C. -- The feeling among some pro experts is that Bart Starr has Green Bay on the winning track again and that the 1979 season will feature a Packer team that brings back memo ries of glory years to Green Bay fans. In exhibition play this sum mer the Packers showed an explosive office. In one game they scored more than forty points. Since Bart Starr's teams in past years (some dis appointing) have offered a good defense but less than enough offense, this is encour aging. Should the 1979 team have a potent offense, Green Bay for the first time in years might really be a power, again. If that happens, a lot of people will feel good about Vince Lombardi's old quarter back getting the Packers back on the rails. Yet Starr knows, and Lombardi didn't, that winning isn't everything. Grantland Rice was correct and Lombardi wrong. The trouble with too many sports events today is that too many think winning is everything. Starr, a gentleman, knows better-and thus deserves to have a pinner! JOHN'S SPORT STOP PRESENTS p.o.w. About eight percent of the federal government's full-time employees work for the Veterans Administration, An average of nearly 182,000 patients were treated each day in Veterans Administration medical centers in 1978. Tomorrow afternoon Coach Joe Schtender will send his Warriors outto met the Fox Valley leaders, ^Jacobs, at Jacobs high school. The Golden Eagles by the virtue of their 25 to 6 win over Crystal Lake Central are cm top of the heap in the conference. The Eagles have a versatile attack. All conference running back Jeff Scime is really a speedster and co-scoring leader in the conference. Senior aid Mark Hudson can really haul them in and scoot to the end zone. Quarterback Scott Choklad, along with wing back Tim Elliott, give the Eagels plenty of offensive power. The defense is headed up by tackle Mike Orndahl a 6'2" 190 pounder. Also on defense is guard Pat Boyle a six footer and 180 and end Kevin Richtner another six footer. With the Eagles flying high from their win over Central, this is the time for the Warriors to bounce back for a win. Having been in all their games, the Warriors have come out on top in only one. With the Jacobs homecoming on tap, it would be nice for Coach Joe and his squad to turn the tables, and spoil a homecoming for a change. The Warriors seem to be healthy, except that Jim Frantz who was injured in the first period last week a doubtful starter. Let's put away the rakes and journey to Jacobs and back the Warriors tomorrow. On The Sidelines » . , • ,®y Dick Rabbit* :•:• 1 * jijj Although the Warriors lost their homecoming game last Friday night, there were a lot of plus factors about the i| :£ homecoming parade. The bonfire on Thursday night was % one of the biggest in recent years, and a good crowd was on hand to take part in the pep rally. The police and fire :£ department were on hand to oversee the activities. School officials appreciate the fine group of people who made the bonfire so successful. Without their help, we would have :j.:: no fire. The parade on Friday afternoon was simply great, jij: A lot of grumbling was heard because of the time element, but there were plenty of floats and organizations had cars with their officers in parade. Barb Ludwig and Jim Aull. did a splendid job of putting it all together, jij: Student participation was better than in the past, and just jij: maybe MCHS has turned the corner for better things to jiji come. * ijij When you get a lot of students involved with all their ' ijij jij: ideas, you can't help but have success, and now if we can jij: just get a few more involved, no telling what the future jij: has in store for the high school. ijjj Sue Hutchinson had her twenty-one game streak broken jiji by Debbie Prochaska from Cary Grove last week. These jiji two could meet this weekend in the finals of the Fox Valley jiji tourney, and it could be some match to watch. Hutch's Harriers showed improvement at Peoria last jij: week. With underclassmen competing, they picked up jij: 34th out of 44 teams. As usual Coach Joe Newton's York jij: team ran away with the meet. York along with Maine jij: East are the class of the state. Chuck Cuda's golfers placed 6th at Lake Forest last jij: week. The Warriors led at the turn, but faltered in the jij: stretch. Congratulations to A1 Ekeroth who was co- jij: medalist with a nifty 77. My Crystal ball really got cracked last week. I can do 3: better picking the pro's than in the area of high school iiji football. This week I'm going to have to go against the Warriors. £: The Jacobs' 'Golden Eagles" just have too much speed for $ our Warriors. Woodstock to beat the Crystal Lake South Gators. The $ Streaks got new life when the Tigers were beaten last ijij week. Dundee to beat Crown. Hard to believe that the ijij Cards have a shot at the title. Central to top Cary Grove in ijij their homecoming game. The Tigers will be ready to claw after their defeat last i-:i: week. :& Marian to beat Montini in a close game. Marengo to beat the Skyhawks in a game between two iji: winless clubs. This could, however, be an upset if the ijij Skyhawks get rolling. Too Tall was a boxer in his school days and he has the determination to see this experiment through. Big as he is, if he can learn his trade by hard work, taking his licks, and avoiding the same mistakes, he could be come a formidable boxer. Too Tall doesn't come over, in an interview, as the traditional footballer, of limited depth. He admitted recently he had thought over his move from the Dallas Cowboys to boxing for years, and says he isn't afraid of taking a punch--he's taken them in younger years. He knows he has a lot to learn and that it may take a number of fights before he becomes a con tender. In short, his attitude is quite healthy. He seems utter ly calm and logical. One sus pects if Too Tall doesn't have a glass jaw, he'll be heard from in the boxing racket, and it might be a big noise.
