Roberts rushed for 103 yards on just nine carries as Johnsburg gained 182 yards on the ground in this first win of the season. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD SPORTS EDITOR picked up the ever-interesting radio broadcast by Tom Parsley and Vern Petersen/-- ; - The defensive play of Tom Jablonskiand the punting of Jim Wilson were bright sides as I listened to the progress of the game. Again we realized two things which our coaches and everybody else knows. Our defense is tough. Our offense needs to put points on the board. • The next home game and last game of the season will be played Nov. 2 with Crown furnishing the opposition. On Friday night of this week, the Warriors travel to Crystal Lake South. October 15,1979 Dear Earl: Here We go again ! Another McHenry Day Reunion on November 17th, 1979 at Fred Howard Park, Shelter No. 4, Tarpon Springs, Fla. Hours are 12 noon to 4 p.m. All former residents of McHenry are urged to attend and bring their own lunch and refreshments. Bill Creutz fires up the Bar-B-Que Grills so anyone desiring to use them, are free to do so. This is a beautiful opportunity to renew acquaintances and also to learn about the changes etc. in the ol' hometown. Everybody really has a wonderful time and the Park is so beautiful that it-in its self is worth the trip. We hope to have a nice crowd at the 5th Reunion. Pauline & Bill Pries STATE SWINGERS--MCHS members of the tennis team, Nancy Glick (left) and Stie Hutchinson, are ready for the action in the State Finals at Arlington Heights beginning Thursday. Sue captured the singles championship in the Round Lake district and Nancy finished fourth to qualify. ' STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Stie Hutchinson and Nancy Glick senior members of Coach Gary Gray's McHenry High tennis team qualified for the State Finals in Arlington Heights starting tomorrow morning. Sue retained her singles championship in the Round Lake District, and Nancy finished fourth. The Warriors as a team finished second in the ten team tourney. This is the highest finish ever for a Warrior team in tennis. Sue and Julie Barnes of Waukegan East met in the finals. Last year they met in the semi-finals. In that event Sue won in three hard fought sets. This year the young Warrior disposed of her Waukegan rival in straight sets 6-3, 6-2..Sue's record is now 29 and 2 on the season. Waukegan West 6-2, 7-5 Nancy playfag competitive tennis for the first year, found herself down in the second set 5 to 2, but rallied 5 straight games to emerge the victor. Particularly pleasing to Coach Gray was the play of his four underclassmen in doubles competition. Both doubles teams Leah Melahn and Jenny Prust and Jean Hoch and Melissa Dowe played well and made it all the way to the qualifying round before bowing out. WARRIOR RESULTS . Glick defeated Booth of Zion, 6-0. 6-0. Hoch-Dowe defeated Round Lake, 6-0, 1-6 and 6-3. ) Melahn-Prust defeated Sch- mitt-Kamppila of Johnsburg, 6- 3, 6-2. State Qualifying Round: Hutchinson defeated Szumlas of Johnsburg, 6-1, 6-0. Glick defeated Patti Martin of Waukegan West, 6-2, 7-5. Hoch and Dowe lost to Waukegan East, 6-3, 6-1. Melahn and Prust lost to Waukegan East, 6-1, 6-0. McHenry High's Dennis Welter wants me to give him the name of the living grad from the earliest graduating class as soon as possible. This Week will be the deadline. If somebody doesn't correct me, Maude Granger is my nominee. Pauline adds this note: In reply to Betty Phelan's broom holder that she ran across from the Central Market it is an antique-it's as old as Bill. You figure it out. That goes back a ways Pauline! 1st Round Sue Hutchinson - bye Nancy Glick - bye Leah Melahn and Jenny Prust - bye Jean Hoch and Melissa Dowe defeated Warren's seeded team of Heinold-DeYoung, 6-4, 6-0. 2nd Round: Hutchinson defeated Behne of Antioch. 6-0, 6-0. Semi Final Round: Hutchinson defeated Laurie Schmitz of Waukegan East, 6-3, 6-0. Glick to Barnes of Waukegan East, 6-1, 6-0. Am not sure if I know how that "Crazy Corner" (Rts. 31 and 120 at Waukegan St.) will look like when finished. Trust it will cause no more confusion. Wanna bet? Now that Southern Cal has beaten the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, we'll probably be hearing from one of the California precincts. The best offense was the best defense as both teams put a lot of points across. Southern Cal players tackled high and made it pay off by causing fumbles. Also watched another high scoring game as the Minnesota Vikings scored a touchdown with only 13 seconds on the clock to beat the Chicago Bears. BEING CHASED, Rick Szumlas of the Johnsburg Skyhawks attempts to shake off a Valley Lutheran tackier as he cuts toward the goal. Szumlas carried ten times as he picked up 50 yards. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Final Round Championship Hutchinson defeated Barnes 6-3, 6-2. Nancy qualified for the finals by defeating Patti Martin of A man who drove through that corner every day once said it wasn't the corner that was to blame. He claimed the fault rested with the drivers who blocked the intersection and those who tired to sneak through after the left turn signal went off. That was one man's opinion MCHS Golfers Surprise With Fine 14-4 Record Athlete's Away This season was mostly & rebuilding season for veteran golf coach Chuck Cuda of the McHenry Warriors. Only two letterman returned from last years 16 and 0 team. The veteran coach said, "Im provement of the un derclassmen gave us a suc cessful season this year". A1 Ekeroth last seasons state qualfier led the team with an average of 39 for nine holes. He was followed by junior Mike Lawler with an average of 41. Mike missed the last seven matches due to an injury. The members who helped to make this a successful season were seniors Terry Remke, Joe Bellich, Butch Pintozzi and Randy' Hall a transfer from California. Juniors were Mike Lawler and Joe Bauml. Sophomore Mike Nank, and freshman Mike Bauml and Brad Adams rounded out the squad. As the season progressed the team seemed to improve, finishing 4th in a field of 22 in the Crown Invitational, third in the Fox Valley Conference. The Warriors also finished second in the I.H.S.A. District, and qualified for the sectional, where they were eliminated by a strong Palatine team. The frosh-soph ended their season with a win over Mun- delein and ended the season with a record of 15 wins and only 2 losses. Boys Golf Awards 1979 Juniors: Joe Bauml, Major M and Emblem. Let me tell thee, it was re v i s i o n o f " T h e B e s t J o k e O f The '30s". Maybe not the best. But, it was of that vintage. Mike Ahlert of Johnsburg, 6- 0, 180 pound football player, is listed on the UW - Whitewater frosh football team. Statistics show Mike making four solo tackles, ten assisted tackles, one pass blocked, and 23 total points. It was evident again that Walter Payton has to carry too big a load. Harper didn't get the headlines, but he got yardage when yardage was needed. The cameras didn't pick up all the action on punts. The Bears were someplace besides getting down under their punts. As wisdom without cour age is futile, even so faith without hope is nothing worth; for hope endures and overcomes misfortune and evil. -Martin Luther. Now we baseball bugs will have to wait for news on trades, holdouts, multi-million dollar salaries, and finally spring training. Phipps will be the starting quarterback next game. When the Lord put man together, he didn't plan on knees being subject to football pileups. Now comes Artis Gilmore, Chicago Bulls basketball center, undergoing knee surgery. Only a few sore knees come from praying too much. If puns weren't the lowest form of wit, I'd pun that the Bears got caught with their punts down. The Bear's pass defense looked woefully inadequate on .the last Viking touchdown. Easy prediction: Couldn't make it to the home football game Friday night so THE UNBEATABLES!
