KIDS IN THE KITCHEN I - Christmas can be a time when youngsters can learn the funda- ' mentals of cooking while having fun. Children can learn about nutrition, arithmetic, kitchen safety and good table manners while preparing seasonal treats which they themselves will ulti mately enjoy. Gingerbread men, fudge, and sugar, oatmeal nut and choco late chip cookies are just a few ideas for recipes that are sim ple enough for a child to do with minimal supervision and guidance. A feeling of importance will accompany the aroma of home- baked cookies when a child re moves a creation from the oven Ibat he or she has baked. • • • • The laugh is the most powerful of voice weap ons. • * * • • J./', , • • . :- V. • / Capture y . W: * m as For the young, and young at heart, it sometimes seems that Christmas takes just a bit longer to arrive. Why do the end of summer vacation, that difficult piano recital, the first examina tion come so quickly, when Christmas morning is always so late? Parents know how edgy chil dren can become waiting for Santa Claus; reminders about OP Sunt Nick, and his list of who's naughty and nice, can go unheard by the best of children. That's why it's so important to Baking cookies, helping with the Christmas cards, getting out the traditional decorations, maybe even a clean sweep of their rooms, wrapping a present or two may be just enough dis traction for youngsters. These activities are part of the V'^25 spirit, as ures • - WHEN TAKING PICTURES of holiday activities, one of the first rales is get in close. A scrapbook of Christ mas, and all the events leading up to it, will be treasured long af ter your children have outgrown their need to get up at 5:30 a.m. on December 25. Here are some suggestions to make these pictures even more poignant. One of the first things to keep in mind is "get in close." A pocket sized Kodak Tele-Ektra- lite camera is excellent for close- ups because it has a built-in te- lephoto lens--in addition to a regular lens--that lets you cap ture your children's natural reac tions without intruding upon them. The camera also has a built-in flash to make matters that much simpler. Look for action shots. Icing those cookies, and wrapping those presents, possibly even, putting that star on top of the tree; are the photos you will trea sure. That means you should keep your camera within easy reach. . When lining up members, of die family for group pictures, ar range them so that everyone looks relaxed. For example, i most people look more formal when standing, less so when sit ting. You might want to have the family gathered around one per son who is trying to wrap a present--or opening one. - While pictures of the family are essential to that Christmas scrapbook, simplicity is also im portant. Putting too much in one photograph makes it look clut tered and possibly not as inter esting. The trick is to take more pictures and zero in on one activ ity at a time. Even though pre-Christmas pictures are great, don't forget the main event--Christmas morning. Have plenty of film on hand and be ready for a day of picture-taking fun.
