NOVEMBER 20,197$ Shown discussing the paper selection for this year's MCC Christmas card are, from left, Art Instructor Ossie Rometo, MCC student Jill Witty, who drew the card design, and Acting MCC President Robert C. Bar tie tt. ' Jill Witty of Woodstock is this year's winner of the annual Christmas card design contest at McHenry County college. Mrs. Witty's pencil drawing of a candle surrounded by holly and poinsettia leaves was chosen as the best of 30 entries submitted by students for the contest. Her design will be reproduced on gold cards sent by MCC's acting President Robert C. Bartlett and his wife, Rosemary, as the offical college Christmas card to more than 500 people across the state. Mrs. Witty is in her second year at MCC and is currently enrolled in a math class and in a watercolor painting class taught by Art In structor OSsie Rometo. Students were told about the contest in MCC classes, and a committee which included art instructors and Bartlett chose the winning entry. Mrs. Witty, whp will graduate from MCC this year, plans to pursue a career in art, possibly as an art teacher. She works both in pencil and in watercolors and has exhibited her work at the Woodstock Art fair. "It's quite an honor to have your work recognized, because it's something you spend a lot of time on and enjoy doing," Mrs. Witty said when told her work was selected as the winning entry in the contest. Nov. 23 Collection Goodwill Visits City The Goodwill Industries truck is scheduled to be in McHenry Fri., Nov. 23, to collect clothing and housewares for the han dicapped trainees, ac cording to Mrs. Nick Adams, 1007 N. Plymouth lane, local representative. Those who believe in Echo Tactics also believe in recycling, such as recycling old discarded glass bottles, aluminum cans or plastic containers. At Goodwill Industries they also believe in recycling. They have been recycling people for nearly 80 years - handicapped and disadvantaged people, men and women w^o have been prematurely discarded. Nearly two million han dicapped men and women in the United States are unemployed, although employable. Each year Goodwill offers thousands of men and women on-the-job training in a wide variety of skills, not to mention the change to regain their self-respect, to become self-supporting and This Saturday, Nov. 17 is the regularly scheduled ihird-Saturday-of-every- month recycling drive held at the McHenry Market Place parking lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the month of December it will be held at the West campus high school parking lot. The Checkerboard Squares, the square dance club in McHenry, Mitt be providing the labor the day of the drive by, helping unload cars and seeing that materials are properly prepared for the next step toward being recycled. Recycling helps save natural resources, saves space in landfills, and aids the groups working on the drives. The following guidelines may be of help to any citizens interested in becoming t a part of McHenry's recycling project. Newspaper-should be lied in both directions, in bundles 8 to 10 inches high, or placed neatly and securely into strong, brown paper bags. All plastic bags should be removed. Wet paper is not acceptable, since newspaper is processed immediately upon unloading and must be dry. Recyled baling twine is available for those who would like to take some home with them. Magazines and corrugated cardboard-should be bun dled separately frbntahe to face the world despite their handicap. The goal of Goodwill Industries is to place or return the han dicapped person to private industry. Employers with a job opening in their business that demands a person with ambition, dedication and a good job skill, are urged to consider hiring one of the "graduates" of Goodwill. These men and women have been professionally. trained and are eager to put their skills to work. Chapel Hill Rd. McHenry (815) 385-0333 OPEN newspapers since they are sold to different outlets. Glass bottles and jars- should be clean and have all metal and plastic removed. Paper labels do not need to be removed. Do not pre- crush glass. All-steel cans-should be rinsed out, labels removed, bottoms cut out and cans flattened to conserve space. Aluminum-should be separated from the all-steel cans since they are processed through different plants. All-aluminum beverage cans usually have "all-aluminum" or '_'re- cy^lable aluminum" printed on tfitem. If in doubt, use a magnet, for a magnet will not stick to the side of an all- aluminum can but will be' attracted to the side of a bi metal can and not to the top. Bi-metal cans are not ac ceptable. Used motor oil-should be in a plastic jug with a secure lid. For further information on the drive held this Saturday or on any of the other 16 drives held in McHenry county that might be more conveniently located, call the McHenry County Defender representative at 385-8512. • • • • Tips are for extra serv ice; they're not manda tory. - - • A layer of paper toweling in the vegetable compart ment of your refrigerator will absorb excess moisture.
