And, in the end, the mourners bre wondering too Board Mem bers At Annual Conference More than 4,000 school board members and ad ministrators from across the state gathered in Chicago this month for the annual conference of the Illinois Association of School Boards. Four Officials from McHenry Community High School District 156 took part in the three-day meeting. Attending were high school board of education members David Benrud, Edward Neumann and Paul Nitz, and Supt. Robert Swartzloff. The conference featured clinics on more than 30 educational topics and problems currently facing local school policy makers. The program also included three general sessions, opportunities to quiz experts in small group meetings, an exhibition of school equip ment and services, and the annual IASB Delegate assembly, a business meeting where school board members elected officers and established policies for the association. IASB President Jonathan T. Howe, a school board member from Northbrook, described the state meeting as "a unique opportunity for school officials in Illinois, to tackle their special problems and concerns, ft has never been more im portant to safeguard control of public schools at the local level than it is now. Locally elected board members, who serve their communities as iluli- ?oa\ part-time, unpaid volul; teers, work toward this gc They need regular training to properly direct the work of their professional em ployees and to keep up with the constant change in education." During the three-day meeting, board members and administrators selected topics for study that are of particular local interest. The program included training sessions on such matters as school finance, collective bargaining, student discipline, evaluating teachers and ad ministrators, rural education, school board policies and new laws and court decisions. Benrud attended a Basic Bargaining clinic dealing with teacher- board negotiations. Featured speakers at the conference included Jacquelyn Mayer, one of the nation's foremost in spirational speakers; Joseph M. Cronin, state superin tendent of education; Olin Stratton, president of the American Association of School Administrators; SECTION ! - PAGE S - PLAINDEALER - WEPNE8PAY, NOVEMBER 28,1979 and ad- Zacharie J. CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES The fifth grade class of Greenwood school have been spending every free moment in their schedule, practicing for their Christmas play. It will be presented Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Greenwood gym. The band and chorus will also be performing. The following Friday, Dec. 21, at 9:30 a.m. all senior citizens are invited to the Senior Citizen's Christmas coffee. Christmas cookies and coffee will be enjoyed in the Learning center after which the special guests will be free to see all the What lust One Person Can Do Motherhood Results In Self-Discovery I was a guest recently at the home of a young couple. They had been blessed with three beautiful children in less than 2Vfe years. The second delivery brought them twins, a boy and a girl. The young wife had hardly gotten used to motherhood when she had three babies to manage. The twins are now 18 months told and the mother has adjusted to her new life and is enjoying it. But it wasn't that way at first. She had been raised in relative comfort, an average' American teenager. She loved her sleep and boasted of needing nine hours a night just to function. After the first child she was exhausted. The demands of her infant seemed over whelming, and she dreamed of getting out, finding a part- time job. She loved her child but resented the absolute demands he made upon her. After the twins arrived she was on the verge of collapse, and thought of running away. But she hung in there and her job. Now she's very happy she did. She speaks of the normal joys of motherhood and tells me she can see the difference bet ween the neighborhood children whose mothers work and those whose mothers stay at home. The children of working mothers, she says, seem difficult to manage, demanding of attention, and even aggressive at times. Her own children play together for a time and once in a while one or another will come over to her, hug her leg and run off. They need the occasional reassurance of her presence. She wonders what the children would feel if she weren't there. She said, "I'm glad I didn't go out to work. I find it easier now with the three than it was when I had only one." That young woman has discovered something about herself. Even though she is now averaging only five to six hours sleep a night, she is happy. The old ways of doing exactly what she wanted to, when she wanted to do it, are a thing of the past. Now she has grown up, and is meeting the challenge of love. With three beautiful children growing up in a loving atmosphere, she has found peace and a heightened sense of self- respect. She is constantly bolstered by all softs of gifts of love from her children and husband. Marriage can be difficult and irksome at times but "love can make it easy, perfect love can make it a joy," as one marriage rite proclaims. 2*%OFP •Id Spice After Shove Cool.. .dMn I •ting. RT. 47 & COUNTRY CLUB RD WOODSTOCK Political Corner DEMOCRATIC KICKOFF Lake county Democrats will meet Friday, Nov. 30, 8 p.m. at the Union hall, 1808 10th street in Waukegan. D e m o c r a t i c C o u n t y Chairman John S. Matijevich said the meeting will be the "kickoff" to the 1980 election campaign, and he urged precinct com mitteemen and other Democrats to attend the i m p o r t a n t m e e t i n g . Deadline for candidates to file petitions to enter the March 18 Primary election is Dec. 17 and county Democrats are expected to slate the "county ticket" for next year's race Safety Hints By Alan J. Dixon Secretary of State In order to provide safer conditions and more con venience for Illinois motorists who normally renew their driver's license during winter months, I call your attention to a program w h i c h c o u l d b e o f i m portance. Renewal notices now are being mailed approximately 45 days before expiration date, but all drivers may renew their license up to one year in advance of the ex piration, thus avoiding ice and snow. Drivers whose birthdays come during cold and bad weather months have been at a disadvantage with regard to taking their driver's license exam. Even when a road test was not required for renewal, they still had to drive to the facility for a photo, often in icy weather on hazardous streets and roads. The alternative offered by my office allows every Illinois driver the op portunity to obtain a license renewal under ideal weather and road conditions, and this service is also available to persons who are usually out of town when their driver's license expires. (A copy of the Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756). ^American Viewpoints If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it away from him.
