PAGE*-PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER S. 1979 • v 'rt iS By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry High Warriors opened Fox Valley play in fine style Friday night with an easy 75 to 50 win over Jacobs high school. It was the third win in four outings for the Wariors this season. The Warriors showed remarkable improvement over the past week, their passing was crisp, and their shooting was adequate. However, their main strength on Friday night, was their ability to help one another on defesne. The inability of the Jacobs guards to handle the pressure by the Warriors proved their downfall in the game1 The Warirors started off slow and midway through the opening period led by a slim 8 to 6 margin. Then Lenny Jensen and Bob Greve got the hot hand and the Warrirs were on their way running off 12 unan swered points to lead at the period 20 to 6. Bobby Zeller along with Jim Johnson took over in the second period and the Warriors with their pressing defense bothering the Jacobs guards broke the game wide open and went in to the locker room at the in termission leading 39 to 18. In the third period with Coach Ludwig shuffling his lineup what seemed to be constantly, the Warriors did not let up and I think everyone but S.I.H. got into the scoring act as the Warriors increased their lead to 59 to 32. The final period the Warriors seem to have a bit of a letdown as with the game on ice began to get a little careless, but never theless had enough for the 25 point victory margin. Bob Greve led all scorers with 26 pts., but could not have done so, without the able passing of Len Jensen, Tony Sroka and Jimmy Johnson, who set up the young junior numerous times with their fine passing. Bob Zeller and Johnson did a fine job on the boards and Bob Bitterman and Chris GOING FOR THE SCORE, Bob Zeller, of the Warriors, outraced his Jacobs defender in their first period action at McHenry West Friday night. Zeller hit for 11 points and was strong on the backboards as McHenry wan their conference opener 75-50. |S* T V; STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD v .f.ho ,*• i " >iitiV n ii Warriors Thump Jacobs In FVC Opener 75 To 50 McHenry School League Raymond's Bowl 11-28-79 After a nice holiday break the league got badk into the swing of ' things,\ but B. Thompson and A. Street were a bit confused as to which way to swing the ball. Need we say more? There were no splits picked up, but I think E. Rogers set a new record with seven splits in one game. Glad it was she and not me; she has a better chance to get them. W. Farrell will be buying another 100 copies of the paper when he sees his name, again, twice in this issue. High games went to : T. Rome with a terrific 213; D. Cameron (bowling on the wrong team as sub), 204; A. Boldt, 203; W. Farrell, 202; B. Bitterman (she-type and on the wrong team) 200; and S. Blume, 193. Should have gotten seven more pins, Shirl! High series winners are pretty much a repeat of high "gamers": A. Boeldt,572; T. Rome, 559; D. Cameron, 555; W. Farrell, 533; and B. Bitterman, 531..Wonder how one makes these illustrous lists? Pictured above with defensive conch Tim Mitchell (left) and head football coach Lew Miskowki are seated (left to right) Dan Coughlin (most improved lineman), Bob Burg (moat improved hack), Tom Baumann (most valuable, best defensive player, and most valuable back), and Bob Moehling (most valuable lineman). Eastern Illinois University head foolbnll coach Darrell Mudra was the guest speaker; the Fathers' Club sponsored the annual banquet. EARL WALSH* So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR- Yep. "Mac" was there. So were several old standbys like the John McGees, Ron Conways, John Huffs and Marv Bauers as the McHenry Warriors opened the basketball season here Friday night with a smashing 75-50 victory over Jacobs High., Am sure there were many more of the regular boosters, but the above mentioned were in my line of vision. Must say Coach Ludwig did not choose to run up the score as he ran no less than twelve players onto the floor after victory was apparent. When the Warriors could not get through the tough zone under the basket, they shot from outside. And how they shot! It was Bob Greve, 5'10" junior, who set the scoring pace. Bob has a keen eye. Len Jensen is the playmaker on the team. He's fast and can hit from the outside. • ^ Bob Zeller, 6'2" junior is the heavy man on the team at 195 pounds. He goes down the floor like a tank in high gear and won't be pushed around much. , Barry Anderson, Rich Glosson and Jim Johnson are big, strong fellows who go for that ball with mucho- gusto. ED'S RENTAL AW SALES 904 N. FRONT STREET We saw things we liked about other bqys on the floor and can easily predict they will see their share of action. We'll be commenting on them. One can be sure the Warriors will face tougher opposition, but they are going to be winners in a fair share of games. Sudden thought as we turn to other subjects: Do you remember the long roller towels that hung on theback. of the kitchen door? If you haven't heard and seen the local Sweet Ade lines, don't miss their per formance at the Johnsburg higlr school on Saturday night of this week. Besides a great blend of voices, those Sweet ones were wearing attractive costumes that only a society writer could describe. Happened in to Bolger's Drug Store the first day of snow and met Virginia Williams. Like a "Mother Hen", Virginia checked to see if I was wearing rubbers over my shoes. Then she checked her nephew, Joseph Doherty, and everybody she could corner. That gal is truly a dedicated Registered Nurse. As we sat waiting for our victuals at the Fox Hole and admiring that beautiful painting by Marilyn Bacon that covers the entire north wall, I heard somebody using my name. As I turned around, Pete DeCicco was just smiling, but Bernie Erjavec wai the guility one. He's one of those north side baseball fans who never misses a chance to throw out a few words about our White Sox. Bernie's wife, a girl from the tall corn state, said she is a regular reader of the Plaindealer -- the front page, then "So I Hear". Must try to get her to reverse that order. -- Back to that painting. If you never saw it, you should. It shows the Riverside Hotel when it had the porch. Old time automobiles on the street are just as they were way back when. Joe Engeln's hardware store (now Bimbo's) is in the background. Am wondering if Frank Gans ever saw that vivid painting. His parents operated the hotel in the long ago. Mrs. John Byers gave us a pleasant surprise when she came to our table and in troduced herself, then called her husband (a big fellow) over to say hello. Like so many people we see in this -growing com munity/, we knew the Byer faces, (but not their name. They are Plaindealer readers. That's what we like to hear. Our schedule didn't permit watching the Bears Sunday, but heard part of the game on the radio. Seemed like the defensive unit won that big one to keep Bear hopes alive. Director Adele Froehlich and her McHenry Choral Club must have something to pull me away from Julie Andrews in Sound of Music and the Lawrence Welk show Sunday night. A pack of talent graces the auditorium stage when the Choral Club assembles. They do much for the Christmas spirit in our community. Listening to the program brought memories of how Sister Andreella enjoyed them. Of course, you know she has retired and moved away. Wherever she is, there will be music. MCHS Soph Cagers Defeat Belvidere And Jacobs Teams Coach Pat yW i r t z' s McHenry High Sophomore cagers defeated Belvidere last week in the Kaneland tourney. John Huff scored the game winning bucket with 0:5 remaining on the clock. Mike Burgdorf led the scoring with 15 pts. Wes Kopsell pulled down 15 rebounds and added 10 pts. Aric Akins caused a tur nover with 0:2 remaining to seal the win. Coming in off the bench, John Bazan snared the rebound that gave the Warriors the ball with 15 seconds, to set up Huff's game winning goal. DEFEATJACOBS On Friday night the Warriors defeated Jacbos 45 to 36. West Kopsell again led the rebounding crew grabbing off 47 in the first three games of the young season. He led the scoring with 15,13 in the second half. John Huff, again under pressure, sank free throws to ice the win. John had 10 pts., 8 coming in the second half. According to Coach Wirtz, defesne of the guards in the second half turned the game around for the Warriors. McHenry vs. Belvidere McHenry Hi' 'Hi St. Regis Pub 1237 N.
