It was given by g o v e r n m e n t a n d congressional officials in 1978 to remove from the farm count those operations having minimal farming activity. With an understanding of feed nutrient composition you can develop a feeding program using low quality roughages that are available on your farm. These roughages might include grass, hay, soybean residue or corn residue. The nutrient composition values can be looked up in Nutrition Data books (I have several) or by actual analysis of the feed products. The main thing to remember is that low quality roughages are low in proteins, minerals and vitamins. This depresses intake because digestibility is slow and thus the passage rate of feedstuffs through the digestive tract is slow. But with proper supplements added, gestating cows can be fed low cost roughages. llay and Pasture Varieties - The 1980 Hay and Pasture Acddcnti varieties list is now available.
